Sitno combines a lake landscape with striking glimpses of church architecture and folklore. The village lies at the foot of a moraine hill, near the twin lakes Rybna and Rokitna. It also has a church featuring details from different architectural styles and a cycle route that passes through Sitno. When choosing a holiday destination, you can weigh up whether you are most interested in bodies of water, cycling, architecture or local traditions.

Two lakes near Sitno

Rybna and Rokitna are near Sitno and are similar, but not the same size. Lake Rybna lies at 142.4 m above sea level. It covers 10 ha, is 0.5 km long and up to 0.3 km wide. Lake Rokitna lies at 143.1 m above sea level; it covers 9.5 ha, is also 0.5 km long and up to 0.3 km wide. If lakes and a moraine landscape suit your holiday, the area around Sitno offers both as a shared landscape highlight.

Cycling through the area

The approximately 52 km “Zaczarowane pejzaże” cycle route runs through Szczecinek, Świątki, Sitno, Dziki, Turowo, Wilcze Laski, Kruszka, Lotyń, Drzewice, Wojnowo, Dębowo, Drawień, Żółtnica, Buczek and Czarnobór, before returning to Szczecinek. If you are planning a cycling trip with several stops, you can include Sitno as part of the circular route. At kilometre 6.2, the yellow-marked cycle route turns left at the edge of the “Dęby Wilczkowskie” nature reserve, heading towards Sitno. The turn-off is beyond a stream that flows into Lake Wilczkowo. Here, the route description connects with named landscape features in the surrounding area, without assuming that Sitno itself is the starting point of the entire route.

Church architecture with a mix of stylistic features

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus was built in 1871 on the site of an older wooden church dating from 1580. Inside, the Neo-Gothic, hall-like space is defined by a two-bay wooden ceiling. The furnishings also combine different styles: a Neo-Gothic pulpit, Neo-Baroque pews and an organ gallery have been preserved. There is also a bell on display that was cast in Bochum in 1873. If you are interested in religious architecture, the church could be a focal point of your visit to Sitno.

Folklore as part of local history

The “Swojacy” folklore ensemble was founded in 2003 on the initiative of Sitno residents. It takes part in various folklore competitions and showcases and represents the municipality in Poland and abroad, including in Belarus, Lithuania and Germany. The ensemble also organises the “Szczecineckie Spotkanie z Folklorem” folklore festival and the “Ludowy Przegląd Kolęd i Pastorałek” folk music competition. For travellers interested in culture, these two events offer different ways to experience folklore and folk music.

The name Sitno has a history too: over time, the village was called “Kurdorf” and described as a health resort. When looking for a holiday apartment in Sitno, you can weigh up your interests: the lake landscape, cycle route, church and folklore each offer a different way to explore the area.
