Glacial Valleys and Routes by the Lakes
The “Diabelskie Pustacie” nature reserve covers 932.04 hectares. Of this area, 637.63 hectares lie within the Nadleśnictwo Borne Sulinowo forest district in the Borne Sulinowo administrative district. The nature reserve lies within the Natura 2000 protected area of the same name.
The blue “Kraina Odwróconego Krzyża” cycling route passes through two glacial valleys that meet at right angles along its central section. They contain five lakes and together form the shape of an inverted cross. The route begins and ends at a crossroads in Borne Sulinowo. The unusual shape of the valleys and the lakes are the main attractions along this route.
The black “Kraina małych jezior” cycling route offers a different landscape: it runs through pine forest dotted with small glacial lakes, between the villages of Rakowo, Komorze, Okole, Uniemino and Strzeszyn. This route also begins and ends at a crossroads in Borne Sulinowo. The two cycling routes can be distinguished by their landscapes: the blue route features valleys and five lakes, while the black route passes through pine forest and small lakes.
An educational trail about 9.1 kilometres long leads from the area around the former Soviet cemetery in Borne Sulinowo to a vehicle rest area on Lake Rymierzewo. You can explore it on foot or by bicycle. Unlike the two cycling routes, which begin and end at a crossroads in town, this trail has a named destination by the lake. Its approximate length and two endpoints give the tour a clear framework.
History and Water Activities
Borne Sulinowo was established as a rear base and barracks for the military training area and was home to the Wehrmacht artillery school. This history adds another way to experience the town alongside its landscape: if you are interested in its former military role, you can make it a focus of your trip alongside cycling and nature experiences.
Water activities also differ in their geographical scope. The Piława is the largest river in the municipality of Borne Sulinowo and a popular canoe touring route at the municipal level. Close to the town, beside an island near the town, is the “sunken forest,” a popular diving site. These locations have different geographical contexts: canoe touring on the Piława refers to the municipality of Borne Sulinowo, while the diving site is in the area close to the town.
