Town History and Exhibitions in Chojnice

Chojnice’s historic old town includes townhouses, the market square, the neo-Gothic town hall and a fountain. The Człuchów Gate adds to the townscape as a six-storey historic monument with a square floor plan, built in the Pomeranian Gothic style. The Historical and Ethnographic Museum is housed in six historic buildings along a preserved section of the medieval defensive walls. The museum’s exhibition rooms are now also located in the Człuchów Gate: permanent and temporary themed exhibitions are presented across five floors.

Two churches offer contrasting features. The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary has three naves and a façade with two towers. Its late Baroque interior includes polychrome paintings by Franciszek Ksawery Haefflich. The church was built by Jesuits, who also founded a school in Chojnice. The Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist was elevated to the rank of minor basilica on 11 March 1993. Zaborski Landscape Park lies in the northern part of Chojnice County and extends across the municipalities of Brusy, Chojnice and Konarzyny. It includes 48 lakes, among them protected, very clear lobelia and charophyte lakes. A dense network of hiking and cycling trails and nature trails provides access to the landscape.

There are also various routes on the water: within the landscape park, the Brda and its tributaries—the Chocina, Zbrzyca, Młosina and Kłonecznica—form a network of varied kayaking routes. Alongside walking and cycling trails, river routes are therefore another activity to consider. The route types mentioned differ considerably, so when planning, you can choose whether you would prefer to hike, cycle or go on a kayaking trip.

Route Lengths and Navigation

Kaszubska Marszruta is a network of cycling routes in Chojnice County, with around 200 kilometres of routes completed. Another cycling route is 166 kilometres long and runs from Bydgoszcz via Rytel, Mylof, Drzewicz, Swornegacie and Bachorze to Chojnice. For hikers, the 55-kilometre Julian Rydzkowski Kashubian Hiking Trail runs from Chojnice via Chojniczki, Bachorze, Stara Piła, Męcikał and Giełdon to Wiele. The different lengths and named places help you distinguish between route types when choosing the focus of your holiday.

In the wider region, the 45.4-kilometre Zbrzyca River Trail also runs from Wiele via Lamk, Leśno, Rolbik, Laska and Śluza to the PTTK station at Lake Witoczno. National road 22 is important for getting around Chojnice County: it connects Chojnice and Czersk. The regional roads radiate out from Chojnice.
