Kayak routes with two time profiles
There are two kayak routes to choose from for a day of paddling. The 12 km route from Zawadzkie to Kolonowskie passes entirely through woodland and takes around 4.5 to 5 hours. From Kolonowskie to Ozimek, the route is 15 km and takes around 3.5 to 4 hours. This second route is considered easy and pleasant, but has numerous weirs where kayaks must be carried around them.
One notable point for planning your day is that the longer route to Ozimek has the shorter travel time. So compare distance and time together, and factor in the portage points. Check current local conditions before setting off; obstacles and water conditions on the route to Ozimek may vary.
Marked trails and their local connections
The marked trails also differ in their routes. The yellow 27Y trail runs between Kolonowskie and Bziniczka. The blue 163N trail starts and ends in Kolonowskie, passing through Staniszcze Małe, Staniszcze Wielkie, Kąty, the outskirts of Zawadzkie, Stawy Pluderskie, Regolowiec and Brzyniczka. The yellow trail connects two named places, while the blue one starts and ends in Kolonowskie. Check the signs locally before relying on the trail markers.
From blast furnace to settlement
The area’s history goes back to 1780, when a blast furnace was built on the Bziniczka at the initiative of Filip Colonna. The Bziniczka is a right-bank tributary of the Mała Panew. A settlement with 24 residential buildings for officials and workers soon grew up around the furnace. In 1797, it was named Colonnowska after its patron and founder. The progression from blast furnace to named settlement provides a concrete historical context for the area’s development.
At Rogolowiec, remains of wooden weirs and dams from the time of the ironworks site can still be found on the Bziniczka. They broaden the perspective from the story of the settlement’s founding to the material traces of the ironworks site.
Regional history on a themed trail
The Regional History Chamber of Kolonowskie is located on the themed trail “Morawsko-polskie ścieżki tradycji i poznania”, created by the Local Action Group “Kraina Dinozaurów”. The trail’s name brings together Polish-Moravian tradition and discovery, broadening the cultural perspective beyond the individual ironworks site.
