Geopark and landscape in the Muskau Arch
On the Polish side, the Muskau Arch Geopark extends through Tuplice, Trzebiel and Łęknica, and on the German side through Weißwasser and Döbern. The Muskau Arch Landscape Park covers areas belonging to five municipalities in the Lubusz Voivodeship: Tuplice, Trzebiel, Łęknica, Przewóz and Brody. It protects the Polish part of the terminal moraine formed by the inland ice sheet. This gives your trip a broader geographical context without reducing Łęknica to a single experience.
Nature and culture at the Education Centre
The Cultural and Education Centre of the UNESCO Muskau Arch World Geopark in Łęknica has permanent and temporary exhibitions. Their topics range from nature, geology and hydrology to dendrology and the area's industrial and cultural history. This gives you the opportunity to learn about different aspects of the surroundings: hydrology deals with water, dendrology with trees, while geology and industrial history offer further perspectives on the landscape and how it has been used. If your travel group has a range of interests, you can tailor your visit to these topics. The centre also offers workshops in ceramics and glassmaking.
Cycling and the Geopath
The Łęknica–Przewóz cycling route starts at OKSiR on ul. Wojska Polskiego in Łęknica. On the return journey, it passes along the “Dawna Kopalnia Babina” Geopath. The route description thus combines a bike ride with a section focused on the former use of the landscape.
South of Łęknica, the “Dawna Kopalnia Babina” geotourism route runs through former lignite and ceramic clay mining areas. Along its 5.3 km, 11 themed stops explain their history. The Geopath offers a different focus from the exhibitions at the Education Centre: here, the former mining areas and their history along a designated route are the main attraction. The route makes a distinct thematic option for anyone interested in the area's industrial history. The number of stops and the stated route length can help you fit this visit into your day's plans.
Getting your bearings locally and in Muskau Park
The Tourist Information Office at the Cultural and Education Centre in Łęknica offers tourist advice as well as guidebooks, maps and promotional souvenirs from the UNESCO Muskau Arch World Geopark. If you would like to get your bearings before choosing a route, you will find various kinds of information about the Geopark there. The Double Bridge is also part of the cross-border context of Muskau Park: it is one of two bridges over the Lusatian Neisse that connect the Polish and German parts of the park.
