Sacred Architecture and Urban History

The Church of Peace in Świdnica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered the largest Baroque timber-framed church in Europe. It was built after the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) under an imperial privilege. The city is also home to the cathedral, with its Gothic-Baroque interior; its church tower is considered the tallest in Lower Silesia. These two buildings offer contrasting architectural features and make Świdnica an interesting destination for visitors interested in church architecture and history.

The market square also tells the story of the city’s development: it is surrounded by townhouses whose origins date back to the Renaissance. In Strzegom, the Basilica Minor of St Peter and Paul is one of the largest Gothic buildings in Lower Silesia. Its bell tower houses Poland’s oldest bell still in operation, cast in 1318. Each of these places offers its own perspective on architectural history—from the Renaissance surroundings of the market square to the Gothic building and its historic bells in Strzegom.

Experience Historic Railways

The Railway Museum in Jaworzyna Śląska combines an extensive collection with rides on historic rolling stock, which take place every weekend. More than 150 historic railway vehicles are displayed across over 2.5 hectares of open-air grounds; the tracks on which they are exhibited extend for 3 kilometres. Operational vehicles include Poland’s oldest active diesel locomotive. Visitors interested in technology will therefore find both a large collection and historic vehicles in operation here.

Places of Remembrance in Krzyżowa and Rogoźnica

During the Second World War, Krzyżowa was a site of early resistance to National Socialism. On 12 November 1989, a Mass of Reconciliation held there led to the founding of the Krzyżowa Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe and the start of restoration work on the palace complex and other buildings. The palace is the foundation’s headquarters. Krzyżowa thus connects its history with a tangible place of European understanding.

In Rogoźnica, the Gross-Rosen Museum offers tours of the former camp grounds and the historic quarries where prisoners were forced to work. A visit focuses on a sombre chapter of history. It is a different kind of outing from the region’s architecture and technology attractions and should be considered as a separate focus when planning your trip.

Cycling Routes and Wine Tastings

For active days, there is a wide range of cycling routes in Świdnicki County. Routes on the Świdnica Plain and in the Strzegom Hills are recommended for families with children. The international R9 Adriatic–Baltic cycling route also passes through the county. These different options may influence your choice of where to stay if cycling is to be an important part of your trip.

Winnica Świdnicka makes a pleasant addition: from May to October, it welcomes individual visitors for wine tastings in the vineyard. It offers both wine-only tastings and wine and cheese tastings.
