Architecture and art in the churches

The Church of Peace in Świdnica is a three-aisled basilica with a Greek-cross ground plan. It was built in 1656–1657 and is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica”. The term “three-aisled” draws attention to its division into a central nave and side aisles. The Greek-cross ground plan, by contrast, describes the layout when viewed from above. These two features offer different ways to look at the building: its interior arrangement and its ground plan.

The Church of Peace houses the exhibition “Faith like a heart of bronze. Treasures of the Church of Peace in Świdnica”, featuring historical objects from the Lutheran church. The exhibits include 350-year-old Bibles, paintings, Baroque liturgical vessels, portraits of pastors, prayer books and epitaphs. This takes the focus beyond the architecture to books, images, objects used in the liturgy and memorials.
