The Wieliczka Salt Mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines”. Underground, the Miners’ Route passes through rugged workings around the oldest preserved Regis shaft. It includes 7 to 14 excavated chambers and is up to 2 kilometres long. This means a visit focuses both on the history of salt mining and on a specific route with a clearly stated length. If you choose Wieliczka as a holiday destination, you can combine its underground attractions with cycling and hiking trails and historic buildings.

Explore underground and outdoors

The Miners’ Route runs around the Regis shaft and includes 7 to 14 excavated chambers, depending on the route. It can be up to 2 kilometres long. These details describe the route without specifying a particular duration or difficulty level. As a distinct idea for a visit, it is easy to distinguish from excursions above ground: underground, the world of the mine workings takes centre stage, while the trails around Wieliczka offer opportunities to get active outdoors.

The yellow trail is a hiking and cycling route between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. Another option for cyclists is the red cycle route: a 27-kilometre loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. The routes therefore differ in their described form and length. If you want to include a route in your day’s plans, you can take the length of the red route into account and choose between hiking and cycling on the yellow trail.

Nature and activities nearby

The “Las i stawy na Grabówkach” ecological reserve is located along the hiking and cycling route from Wieliczka. Nature and exercise can be considered together as themes for an outing here, without implying that a specific route passes through the reserve. Siercza also has a riding stable where you can ride under the guidance of an instructor. This adds a supervised horse-riding activity to the options.

The different experiences offer a range of focuses: the Miners’ Route leads into the mine workings, the cycling routes are described as outdoor trails, and the riding stable in Siercza offers riding under supervision. During your stay, you can choose whether you are most interested in mining history, a cycling tour or horse riding. These different kinds of outings can be considered as reasons to stay in Wieliczka when choosing a holiday apartment.

Churches and historic sites

The churches in the area also tell the story of different periods of construction and works of art. The wooden Church of St. Sebastian in Wieliczka was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. The parish church of St. Clement was founded by townspeople in 1381; it retains architectural elements from the 13th and 14th centuries. The Franciscan church and monastery were the first stone church of the Reformers’ Province of Lesser Poland. They were built in the first half of the 17th century.

In Grabie, the parish church of the Assumption of Mary dates from 1742. It contains a Gothic stone baptismal font from the 15th century. In Siercza, the Ursuline convent is housed in a former Lubomirski palace dating from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In Raciborsko, remains of a former manor complex have been preserved, including a granary. The Jewish historic cemetery in Wieliczka dates from the 18th century. Together, these places offer points of interest for a stay during which you would like to explore different periods and architectural styles.

Planning your visit and local pages

Zamek Żupny brings together the history of salt mining and exhibitions: an archaeological exhibition traces the development of salt production from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages; one exhibition includes a collection of about 1,000 objects. On 8 September 2026, Zamek Żupny and its courtyard were closed for renovation work. The work is expected to continue until the end of 2028. If you are planning a visit, take this stated renovation period into account. Metropolitan-area buses connect Wieliczka with Kraków and offer another point of reference when choosing where to stay.
