Salt history below and above ground

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is the oldest salt-mining enterprise in Polish territory; its origins date back to the Middle Ages. The Muzeum Żup Krakowskich is located in Zamek Żupny. Exhibitions about the salt mine are held in the castle rooms, continuing the story of mining above ground in a historic setting.

The Żupny Garden is an integral part of the castle grounds. It was reconstructed from 1993 to 1995 and consists of two terraces. This makes the garden another, distinct part of the history of salt: here, the focus is not on the mines, but on the design of the historic castle grounds.

The Regis Shaft offers a striking combination of mining history and hands-on experience. It is the oldest preserved shaft of the salt mine and the only surviving medieval mining shaft in the city. It reopened to tourists in 2012, and the approximately two-kilometre-long Miners’ Route starts there. On the guided tour, participants receive mining equipment, learn about former working methods and take on practical mining tasks. The underground miners’ route includes 7 to 14 excavated chambers in the rugged workings around the shaft and is up to two kilometres long. The Chapel of St. Kinga also shows how closely salt mining and design are connected: it lies 101 metres underground, and many elements of its interior are carved from salt. Salt mining is therefore presented not only as work underground, but also as a source of material for an extraordinary interior.

Culture and outdoor activities in the wider Wieliczka destination

The salt mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines”. The churches provide further historical points of interest. The wooden St. Sebastian’s Church in Wieliczka was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. The parish church of St. Clement was built in 1381 with funds donated by the townspeople; it also preserves architectural elements from the 13th and 14th centuries. The Franciscan church and monastery were founded in the first half of the 17th century and were the first stone church of the Lesser Poland Reformed Franciscan Province.

Beyond the city of Wieliczka, the wider destination offers a range of other historic sites. The parish church in Grabie dates from 1742 and contains a Gothic stone baptismal font from the 15th century. In Siercza, the Ursuline convent is housed in a former Lubomirski palace dating from around the turn of the 20th century. Differences in construction dates and architecture broaden the picture beyond the history of salt mining.

There are several routes to choose from for active days. The yellow route is a walking and cycling trail between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. The red cycling route, by contrast, is a 27-kilometre loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. The distinction is useful: one route connects two places, while the other forms a circuit through Wieliczka and Siercza. The “Las i stawy na Grabówkach” ecological protected area is also located along the walking and cycling route from Wieliczka. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

Another activity in the wider Wieliczka destination is horseback riding in Siercza: a riding stable offers rides under the guidance of a riding instructor. Check availability in advance.
