Sułków: Chapel, Church and Harvest Festival Tradition

Alongside the Church of the Assumption of Mary, Sułków has a chapel with three dedications and the remarkable history of the Sułkowianie ensemble. A harvest festival performance by the ensemble connects its musical history with a specific local tradition. Church, Chapel and Sułkowianie

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Sułków was consecrated on 15 November 1998. A chapel in Sułków was founded in 1859 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Saint Mary Magdalene and the Archangel Michael. The two dates mark different points of reference: the church has a confirmed consecration date, while the chapel has a year of foundation. Its threefold dedication also gives the chapel its own religious identity.

In its first ten years, the Sułkowianie ensemble gave more than 200 concerts in Poland and abroad. At the 2011 harvest festival in Sułków, it performed the traditional custom of singing and dancing around the harvest wreath. These two examples highlight different aspects: performances at home and abroad on the one hand, and a local celebration featuring singing and dancing around the harvest wreath on the other. Alongside the church and chapel, music and festival traditions are also part of the village’s cultural life.

Wieliczka: Mining, Architectural History and Routes

The wider Wieliczka destination has its own points of interest. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines.” The underground Miners’ Route covers 7 to 14 mining chambers in the rugged workings around the oldest preserved Regis Shaft and can be up to 2 kilometres long. Mining history thus forms a different theme from Sułków’s church and festival culture.

Historic churches also offer distinct points of interest in Wieliczka. The wooden Church of St. Sebastian was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. Architectural elements dating from the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved in the parish Church of St. Clement, built in 1381 with funding from the townspeople. The Franciscan Church and Franciscan monastery in Wieliczka were the first stone church of the Lesser Poland Reformed Franciscans Province and were built in the first half of the 17th century. The three examples point to different aspects of history: Renaissance paintings, preserved older architectural features and the history of a religious complex.

A dated visitor notice is also important when planning a trip: on 8 September 2026, Zamek Żupny and its courtyard were closed for renovation work, which was expected to continue until the end of 2028. Check the status before planning a visit.

Routes and Activities in the Wider Destination

Routes in Wieliczka vary in type and course. The yellow route is a hiking and cycling route between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. The red cycling route is a 27-kilometre loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. This means that a route described as suitable for both hiking and cycling is complemented by one specifically designated as a cycling loop. “Las i stawy na Grabówkach” lies along the hiking and cycling route from Wieliczka.

Siercza has a riding stable offering horse riding under the supervision of an instructor. If this activity is an option for your trip, check availability in advance.
