Cycling and hiking trails with distinctive features
The educational cycling trail “Trees with History, Birds of Today” combines nature themes with a longer ride. The route in the landscape park is 28.5 km long and has seven stops. It runs through Racot, Darnowo, Wyskoć, Rogaczewo Małe and Wielkie, Rąbiń, Turew, Stary Gołębin and Spytkówki, before returning to Racot. The distance and the listed places give you concrete points of reference when fitting a cycling trip into your day’s plans.
The ecological educational trail offers a shorter route: it runs for 12 km from Rogaczewo Małe via Rogaczewo Wielkie and Rąbiń to Turew and also has seven stops. The two trails differ in length and route. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on the longer educational cycling trail or the shorter nature trail.
Hikers will also find trails with different points of interest. A section of the Greater Poland Way of St. James runs through the landscape park. The park is also on the route of the “Travelling with Mr Tadeusz” hiking trail. Kościan County has marked trails maintained by various organisations; the Kościan branch of PTTK provides a map of the hiking trails it looks after. Other marked routes include the Ziemiański Cycling Route.
Historic places and distinctive buildings
The palace, park and estate complex in Racot was created in the late 18th century and the second half of the 19th century. In 1921, the palace became the summer residence of the Presidents of the Republic of Poland. These dates relate to different stages in the estate’s history and make Racot an interesting stop for travellers who would also like to see historic buildings on their tour.
Other places showcase different architectural periods. The historic wooden Church of the Assumption of Mary in Stary Gołębin dates from the second half of the 17th century. The wooden Church of St Michael the Archangel in Błociszewo dates from 1736. In Lubiń, the Church of St Leonard was built as a small Romanesque church in the early 13th century; from 1549 to 1556, it was remodelled in the Gothic style. In Turew, a Baroque residence was remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in the first half of the 19th century.
Another historic site is the larch chapel in Rąbiński Forest. Designed in the Zakopane style, it was built in the early 20th century in memory of a fatal hunting accident. Together with the churches and the residence in Turew, it offers another reason to include architecture and history in your trip.
Kościan and water activities
In Kościan, the water tower serves two unusual purposes today: it is a climbing wall and an astronomical observatory. Kościan is also home to a 15-hectare park with numerous walking paths.
