Glomfjord combines hiking trails and historic sites with views of the fjord and glacier. It also offers winter sports and cultural events. Which aspect of the place interests you most can shape your travel plans: you can focus on walking and hiking routes, viewpoints, or active days at Glomfjord Alpinsenter.

Trails with a range of stops

A historic route through Glomfjord begins at Meløy kulturhus, passes through Hylla and Jæra, goes by Gammelkontoret, and ends at the water outlet house near Glomen. The route links several named locations along the way. If you choose this route, you can use the place names to orient yourself along its different sections, without assuming a particular walking time or distance.

Another hiking option takes you around Lille Glomvann. There is a shelter by the water on this trail, near Meløy kulturhus. Glomfjord also has the Sentrumsrunden hiking route, a collaboration between the Meløy cultural office and Meløy frisklivssentral. So, in addition to the historic route, you can choose a circuit around a body of water or a hiking route known as Sentrumsrunden. The different routes and their stops can help you decide what kind of trail to include in your trip.

Fjord and glacier views

A trail starting at Glomfjord skole offers views of Svartisen, Glombreen and the fjord. Fykantrappa, in the area around Glomfjord, offers views of the fjord and mountains. If scenic experiences are important to you, you can mark these two destinations as separate points in your travel plans.

Winter sports and tours

Glomfjord Alpinsenter has a chairlift and varied downhill runs with views of the fjord and glaciers. The ski centre also provides easy access to tours towards Istinden and Tverrfjellet. These include ski tours and summit hikes with views over Glomfjord. You can therefore consider the downhill runs at the ski centre and tours towards the two mountains as different ways to spend your time. If you choose Glomfjord primarily for winter activities, the area around the ski centre described here offers both downhill runs and tour options.

Gråtådalstua is also located in the area around Glomfjord. It is an unstaffed cabin with nine beds, and must be booked in advance. This is a separate overnight option for a tour, not the same as a holiday home offering. Check the booking requirement if you plan to include the cabin in your itinerary.

Culture, events and swimming

The Glomfjord Vinterfestival is a volunteer-run festival featuring winter activities as well as cultural and social events in Glomfjord. It brings different kinds of events together under one name. Meløy Fritidsbad is another place to visit in town: its changing rooms and heated pool are adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Getting there and choosing your destination

Glomfjord is in Meløy municipality, on Kystriksveien, County Road 17. Buses to Glomfjord run daily from Bodø and from places in southern Nordland. When choosing a holiday destination, you can consider these transport connections alongside your planned activities: hiking routes, scenic views, winter activities and cultural offerings all provide different reasons to consider Glomfjord. A holiday apartment in Glomfjord is an option worth searching for, especially if you want to plan your trip around the experiences described here.
