The hike up Åmnesfjellet
The hike up Åmnesfjellet leads from Kjørhaug along the old path to Kjørhaugvatnet, then continues up the mountain ridge. You can continue the hike to the highest point at 600 m. You can make the lake an intermediate destination or extend the hike along the ridge to the summit.
The trail is well marked; parking is available at Åmnes Camping. Markings and parking arrangements may change, and trail conditions can also vary. So check the latest information before setting out. There is a collection box on the hike at an elevation of 530 m, slightly below the highest point.

A day trip to Engenbreen
A day trip to Engenbreen, a glacier tongue of Svartisen, is possible from the area around Åmnes. The journey involves 40 km by car and about ten minutes by boat. Check times and access arrangements again before setting off.
Meløy: glaciers, trails and scenery
In the destination of Meløy, Svartisen is Norway’s second-largest glacier and also the lowest-lying glacier on mainland Europe. Engabreen, also known as Engenbreen, is a glacier tongue of Svartisen that stretches towards the Holandsfjord in Meløy. Meløy is surrounded by an archipelago of more than 755 large and small islands.
The route to Engabreen begins with a boat trip across the Holandsfjord to the landing point at Engen. Boat services are seasonal; check the timetable before travelling. Guided glacier hikes offering views of the blue ice are available at Engabreen. The walk to the ice of Svartisen takes about an hour through easy terrain and is also suitable for families with children. Conditions may vary by season.
Meløy’s trails also offer a range of options: on Støtt, you can choose from four routes of varying difficulty: Svenningen rundt, Helløya rundt, Helløya-Innerstøtt rundt and Støttværet rundt. Glomfjord Alpinsenter has a chairlift and varied ski runs with views of the fjord and glacier. Winter operations and snow conditions are seasonal. Meløy also provides good access to hikes in Láhko National Park. Ferries, express boats and buses connect the island communities and places in Meløy; routes and timetables may change.
Rock art and history in Meløy
The Fykan rock art site dates back to the Early Stone Age and is 8,000 to 9,500 years old. Signposts and arrows lead from the road to the Åmøy rock art site, as does an increasingly well-developed path. Check the signage and trail conditions before your visit. Øysund is also part of the region’s history: in the Iron Age, it was a central place and possibly a centre of power in Nord-Hålogaland.
Traditional dishes in Meløy
The old barn at Myrvoll Kulturgård has been converted into a café, library and gallery. On selected opening days during the summer season, traditional dishes made with local ingredients are served there, including sour cream porridge, flatbread, dried meat and meat soup.
