Engavågen: Hiking Trails, Views and Bondestua
Accommodation in Engavågen
Explore Engavågen along trails with different destinations: a paved walking path leads from Vallvågen boat harbour to the headland of Verdens ende; hikes to Sivertbu and Stordalstinden start at the Samfunnshuset Idun community centre. Other highlights include views of Meløy’s skerry coast from Koppen and Bondestua in the town centre.
Trails and Places to Visit in Engavågen
The walking path to Verdens ende begins at Vallvågen boat harbour and follows a paved route to the headland beyond Nordtun HelseRehab. The path is designed for people with disabilities. A permanent exhibition of nature and wildlife photographs is installed along the route. This walk combines a clearly marked destination with an exhibition to see along the way.
There is parking at the Samfunnshuset Idun community centre. The hike to Stordalstinden starts there, and the trail to Sivertbu can also begin here. Sivertbu is a barbecue hut built by Idun Bygdelag at Lushågen in spring 2009. The trails therefore share a starting point but lead to different destinations.
The hiking trail in Engavågen also includes Lavvoll and Bråten, two covered tables along the route. Nordtunhytta is a shelter on a hiking trail between the school and the kindergarten. These facilities are distinct: Lavvoll and Bråten are tables, while Nordtunhytta is a hut.
Views from Koppen and Stordalstinden
Koppen offers good views of Meløy’s skerry coast. Nearby, the hike on Stordalstinden offers a different panorama: from there, you can see the Helgeland coast, Svartisen and Helgelandsbukken. On clear days, the Lofotveggen may also be visible. If the view is an important part of your outing, the perspectives differ between the skerry coast and the mountain hike; views of the Lofotveggen depend on clear conditions.
Bondestua in the Town Centre
Bondestua is a café and pub in the centre of Engavågen, with 70 seats indoors and outdoors. It serves Norwegian home cooking, sometimes with its own variation. Bondestua also offers catering for large and small private or business events. If you are planning a visit, check the opening hours and current offerings in advance, as details may change.
Meløy as a Wider Travel Area
The wider destination of Meløy offers more options for planning your trip. Meløy is surrounded by an archipelago of more than 755 large and small islands. Ferries, express boats and buses connect the island communities and places in the municipality. Routes and timetables may change, so check the times before making a specific journey.
Meløy also offers hikes of varying difficulty. On Støtt, you can choose from four routes: Svenningen rundt, Helløya rundt, Helløya-Innerstøtt rundt and Støttværet rundt. For an outing in a glacial landscape, Svartisen is another landmark: it is Norway’s second-largest glacier and the lowest-lying glacier on mainland Europe. The trail to the ice of Svartisen takes about an hour through easy terrain and is also suitable for families with children; conditions may vary by season.
Engabreen, also called Engenbreen, is a glacier tongue of Svartisen that extends towards the Holandsfjord in Meløy. The route to Engabreen begins with a boat trip across the Holandsfjord to the landing point at Engen. Boat services are seasonal; check the timetable before travelling.
