Kapelle: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Kapelle combines orchards, authentic polder landscapes, maritime impressions and impressive memorial sites. The village centres of Kapelle, Biezelinge, Eversdijk and Schore are surrounded by green landscapes and orchards. At the same time, Wemeldinge is situated on the Oosterschelde. The landscape also includes the Kapelse Moer, one of the last remaining areas of authentic Zeeland polder landscape.

Landscape

The connection between the landscape and regional fruit growing is particularly vivid along the 17-kilometre Fruit Route, which leads through the “Blossom of Zeeland” and passes the Fruit Growing Museum in Kapelle. Along the route, roadside stalls offer freshly picked apples, homemade jam and other treats. In this way, the open landscape and tangible products of the region meet along the route, without fruit growing appearing merely as a backdrop.

Culture

The ZeeuwsFruitMuseum presents the history of fruit and fruit growing. The museum garden is home to 170 different fruit trees, each labelled with its own name. The museum also has a working auction clock; its digital auctioneer explains how an auction works. Regional products are available in the museum shop. The museum’s various sections thus take visitors from the history of cultivation through the visible diversity in the garden to the ways in which fruit and regional produce are presented.

In Wemeldinge, narrow lanes, also known as “slopjes”, lead to the streets behind the Dorpsstraat. Signs indicate who used to live in the lanes. The Molen Aeolus can be visited by appointment. The Hervormde Kerk van Kapelle has preserved an interior that survived the iconoclasm.

Water and Routes

On the southern side of the Oosterschelde lies the first 5-star diving hotspot in the Netherlands. The dive sites between Wemeldinge and Kattendijke are known for their lush and diverse underwater life. The “de Hoek” dive site is located near Wemeldinge on the Oosterschelde. The “Galjoen zonder poen” wreck is also about a five-minute swim from the shore, at a depth of approximately 25 metres.

There are also routes above the water, offering various views. The promenade in Wemeldinge invites visitors to take a walk with views of the Oosterschelde. Hiking trails lead through the historic village centre, through orchards and along the Oosterschelde. Jachthaven Wemeldinge is located in an old lock complex. It has side pontoons with electricity and water connections, luxurious sanitary facilities, bicycle and kick-scooter rental, as well as a technical service.

History

Kapelle’s history also includes memorial sites. 229 French soldiers are buried at the French Military Cemetery of Honour in Kapelle. It is the only French cemetery of honour from the Second World War in the Netherlands. The Memorial 40-45 Kapelle Museum uses its collection to tell the personal stories of French soldiers in the Netherlands, as well as of residents of the village of Kapelle who knew them. Together with the municipality of Kapelle, the museum organises the Toujours Kapelle event week every May.

In Wemeldinge lies the Vliedberg, also known as Kasteelberg, with an adjoining church site. It is also the oldest village centre and is dated to approximately the 11th century. Thus, the historical traces found there stand alongside Kapelle’s memorial sites, without the two histories telling the same story.
