Sluis: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Sluis combines a wide-ranging coastal landscape with historic towns, fortifications and special nature areas. The beaches of the municipality of Sluis stretch from ’t Zwin near Cadzand-Bad to Breskens. In addition, the municipality designates five sports beach locations for organised beach activities and activities in the surf zone.

Coast and nature

Near Nieuwvliet lies the Verdronken Zwarte Polder. The area comprises mudflats, salt marshes, dunes, gullies and beach shaped by the tides. The Verdronken Zwarte Polder can be explored on a walk or excursion. At several points along the Zeedijk, a 2.5 km-long walking trail begins there. Another special feature can be found on the beach at Cadzand: visitors can search there for prehistoric shark teeth exposed by the tides.

History and culture

The Wallen van Sluis originally arose as defensive walls and have existed for more than 600 years. They are one of the few places where the rare European tree frog occurs. A municipal walking path runs along a large part of the Wallen van Sluis, while a cycle path also runs along their eastern side. History, landscape and traces of special amphibians come together here in a shared environment.

Aardenburg also combines the past and nature. The Cultuurforum Aardenburg museum offers an interactive introduction to Roman times in Aardenburg; visitors can play real Roman games there. The Wallen van Aardenburg date from the Eighty Years’ War and also feature characteristics from Roman times and the Middle Ages. Today, they form a nature area inhabited by European tree frogs and other special amphibians. Walking paths run through a large part of the area.

In Cadzand-Dorp, historic structures are directly present in the townscape. The village is considered one of the oldest medieval ring villages in Europe. The houses are arranged approximately in a circle around the church. The Nooit Gedacht windmill is a prominent landmark of Cadzand-Dorp. In addition, a World Peace Flame with fire from all continents burns there continuously.

Townscapes and museums

Remains of the former fortifications can be seen around Retranchement. Fort Nassau is among the fortification remains preserved there. At the ’t Zwin visitor centre in Retranchement, the history of the nature area of the same name is explained, as is the relationship between people and the landscape.

In Sint Kruis, the blunt tower of the Dutch Reformed Church built in the 15th century is locally known as De Peperbusse. Sint Anna ter Muiden has a historic square with trees and historic buildings. This square is Zeeland’s first protected townscape. There is also a 17th-century church there with a distinctive 14th-century tower.

In Groede, Het Vlaemsche Erfgoed is embedded in the street structure of the village dating from the 13th century. The shops and workshops of Het Vlaemsche Erfgoed house cultural and historical collections. In IJzendijke, Museum Het Bolwerk is the museum of the Staats-Spaanse Linies. The museum is housed in a former governor’s building.
