Zuidzande – War Memorial, Windmill and Flower-Covered Dikes

Memorial and Village Square

Zuidzande combines a compact village square with unusual reminders of the village’s history. The war memorial stands in the square near the church in Zuidzande. Its design alone clearly sets it apart from an ordinary memorial: it depicts a damaged bronze kitchen chair on a red-brick plinth, complemented by a brass plaque. The combination of an everyday object, visible damage and an inscription gives the site a distinctive and immediately recognisable form.

The memorial commemorates nineteen local residents who lost their lives during “De Beschieting” from 6 to 29 October 1944. The remembrance of this event is therefore visibly part of the village square and can be combined with a walk through the centre. The village square in the heart of Zuidzande is also home to a restaurant in the former Hervormde Kerk. Molen Zuidzande and Special Mill Technology

A second distinctive landmark is Molen Zuidzande on the Sluissedijk in Zuidzande. The round stone grain belt mill was built in 1874. Its special character lies not only in its design, but also in a technical detail: Molen Zuidzande has a wooden Hoepelvang brake. There are only three mills in the Netherlands with this special type of brake. Those interested in regional structures and historical technology will therefore find a clearly distinctive reason to visit.

Flower-Covered Dikes and the Landscape of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

The landscape around Zuidzande shows its distinctive character particularly in its flower-covered dikes. The Oude Zeedijk near Zuidzande is considered one of the most beautiful flower-covered dikes in West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. These dikes did not arise by chance: they are the result of centuries of land reclamation activities. Their importance today therefore stems from the interplay between landscape history and plant life.

On many dikes in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, extensive grazing by roaming flocks of sheep has contributed to diverse plant life. The dikes thus represent a landscape whose appearance has been shaped both by human land reclamation and by the way the land was managed. This makes them an independent nature and landscape theme alongside the village’s buildings.

The Zwin Route between Border Villages and Coastal Landscapes

The 39 km-long Zwin Route runs along salt marshes, mudflats and sandy areas. It also passes through border villages with a typically Flemish character. Different landscapes and types of settlement therefore meet along this route: open areas by the water stand alongside villages whose character has been shaped by the border region. These landscape elements give the Zwin Route a clear profile for a longer exploration of the surrounding area.

Nature Experiences at De Knokkert

At De Knokkert, also known as Bos van Erasmus, a woodland with beech, poplar, ash and maple trees surrounds the old farmstead of farmer David Erasmus. The Knokkertbos is home to, among others, owls, woodpeckers and salamanders. The woodland therefore complements the flower-covered dikes and the Zwin Route with a nature theme centred on trees and wildlife.
