Kapelle between the village centre and fruit orchards

Kapelle is a circular village: at its centre stands the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk, surrounded by houses. Annie M.G. Schmidt was born in Kapelle in 1911.

In the Zuidhoek neighbourhood, the “Jip en Janneke wijk”, the street names refer to characters from her stories.

History, remembrance and architecture

Kapelle’s French military cemetery contains the graves of many French soldiers who died in the Netherlands during the Second World War. Charles Trepel and René Guy are buried there.

The Memorial 40-45 Kapelle can be reached on foot from Kapelle/Biezelinge railway station in ten minutes and regularly organises excursions to battlefields.

The Nederlands Hervormde Kerk dates from 1908 and has a front tower from 1877–1878. With its tower and family grave, it is of architectural and cultural-historical significance and has ensemble value. Its interior survived the Beeldenstorm.

Fruit-growing history with insights and regional products

At the ZeeuwsFruitMuseum, you can operate a preserved auction bell from 1917 yourself and experience how fruit auctions used to work.

Tours for groups of 4 to 20 people are available exclusively by appointment for €25.00 per group.

The museum café is freely accessible, even without visiting the museum; groups can also be offered lunch. The museum shop is likewise freely accessible without a museum visit and sells Zeeuwse streekproducten as well as products related to fruit or fruit growing.

Trails, woodland and cultural landscape

The approximately 17-kilometre Fruit Route runs through the orchards around Kapelle. The Kapelse Moer is part of the Yerseke- en Kapelse Moer Natura 2000 area. It is one of Zeeland’s oldest cultural landscapes: water, peat and human use shaped it; today, it is home to special plants and meadow birds.

The QR-FIT exercise route offers a long variant of 2.4 kilometres with 12 exercise posts and a short variant of 1.4 kilometres with 9 exercise posts. It runs from the De Bloesem sports centre towards Ambachtsherenwegeling and back to the De Bloesem sports centre via the Kapelse bos.

In addition, an exercise route comprises 16 exercises and is aimed primarily at older people who want to train their strength and balance and do stretching and extension exercises.

Next to the Kapelse bos is a natural playground with tree trunks and hills for climbing and scrambling. The Kapelse bos has been transformed into a Kabouterbos; the gnomes can be recognised by their red hats.

Festivals and practical orientation

The Kapelse Dagen is an annual village festival in the centre of Kapelle featuring sports activities, a fair, music and a street market. In 2026, it will take place from Thursday, 27 August, to Saturday, 29 August.
