Wemeldinge is located on the Oosterschelde, which borders the town. Wemeldinge is particularly known for its dive sites: the Wemeldinge-Kattendijke area is described as the first five-star diving hotspot in the Netherlands. If you are planning a holiday apartment in Wemeldinge, this makes it a place whose character is shaped by the water and maritime experiences.

Near Wemeldinge West, the wreck “Galjoen zonder poen” lies about a five-minute swim from the shore at a depth of around 25 metres. The “de Hoek” dive site is also located near Wemeldinge West, where the dike bends towards the Oosterschelde.

Wemeldinge Beach lies behind the promenade on the Oosterschelde, near the town’s marina. A large part of the beach disappears at high tide. Therefore, plan your time at the beach with the tides in mind. This keeps the water area a concrete part of your daily planning rather than merely a backdrop to your stay.

Cycling at Wemeldinge Beach

Wemeldinge Beach is a designated stopping point on the 51.4-kilometre “Zilte route langs mosselen en oesters” cycling route. If you would like to include cycling in your trip, you can plan this specific stop in Wemeldinge as a point of reference. The route complements the diving and beach themes with an inland perspective on the town.

Windmills with history and preserved technology

The windmills also give Wemeldinge a distinct historical profile. Molen De Hoop is a grain windmill dating from 1866 on Westelijke Kanaalweg in Wemeldinge. It is a round stone Dutch windmill with a wingspan of 21.70 metres. Molen Aeolus is a grain and hulling mill in Wemeldinge and was built in 1869. The windmill is still almost completely equipped with three pairs of millstones and a sheet-metal hulling stone.

At Molen De Hoop, the focus is on the exterior form and its wingspan, while at Molen Aeolus it is on the almost completely preserved technical equipment. Molen De Hoop is open for visits on Saturdays between 13:00 and 16:00. Molen Aeolus is open for visits on the last Saturday of each month from 10:00 to 15:00.

Wemeldinge to suit your own travel rhythm

Those who enjoy switching between water, cycling and culture can view the town’s highlights as different elements of a stay. The dive sites, Wemeldinge Beach, the cycling stop and the windmills appeal to different interests, without requiring you to commit to just one way of exploring.

When choosing between a holiday apartment and a holiday home, you can match these different aspects of the town with your personal travel plans. The themes you want to shape your days provide the right framework for choosing your accommodation in Wemeldinge.
