Oegstgeest: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Historic estates, old waterways, parkland and paths through nature reserves are among the distinctive settings in Oegstgeest. The area's history stretches from the medieval Thuijs te Poelgheest to routes connecting today's green spaces, castles and waterways.
Culture and History
Oud-Poelgeest is an estate on the old beach ridge that runs through Oegstgeest from south to north. In the Middle Ages, a Thuijs te Poelgeest stood along the waterway Mare, now called the Haarlemmertrekvaart. Kasteel Endegeest is another historical landmark: the medieval castle was first mentioned in 1305. In 1647, a new building replaced the structure that stood there at the time; after subsequent renovations, this building still stands today.
The Willibrorduskerk has its own distinctive historical character. It acquired the popular name “Groene Kerkje” after ivy was planted against its church walls towards the end of the 19th century. The present building, including its church tower, was constructed in 1662 and 1663. The Oud-Poelgeest estate is also located nearby and is freely accessible to walkers. The coach house at Oud-Poelgeest is home to a hotel-restaurant.
Nature and Water
Rhijngeest is an 8-hectare wooded park near Oegstgeest Town Hall. It is home to a great variety of plants, trees and birds, attributed to the different soil types consisting of sand, clay and peat. The Klinkenbergerplas was created through sand extraction. A walk of approximately 2.8 km around the lake starts at hiking junctions 05 or 07. The deep southern lake of the Klinkenbergerplas is suitable for swimming, fishing and diving.
The 20-hectare Poelgeest polders lie next to the new residential districts of Leiden and Oegstgeest. They have been developed as a marsh and reed area and are now an important bird habitat. Walking paths run through the Poelgeest polders, with bridges crossing the area. There is also a landing stage for canoes and sloops.
Routes through Oegstgeest
The Romeinse Limespad, part of the nationwide hiking network, runs through Oegstgeest. In addition, the area has a network of recreational cycling routes with junctions. Several named walking and hiking routes take in the different landscapes and historic sites without being limited to a single area.
The 8 km “Landgoedwandelen: Oegstgeest” hiking route partly follows the beach ridge. It passes the castles of Oud-Poelgeest and Endegeest, the Rijngeest estate and the Bos van Wijckerslooth, as well as running through Leidse Hout city park. Another route, the “Krekenpad Haaswijk en Groene Kerkje”, passes the creeks in Haaswijk. These creeks date from the time when the (Oude) Rijn was still a tidal river more than a thousand years ago.
The Bos van Wijckerslooth was purchased by the municipality of Oegstgeest in 1949 and opened to the public as a walking park. A 6 km walk in Oegstgeest passes places where Jan Wolkers lived, played, went to school or worked. In addition to paths and avenues, it often runs through green spaces. The walking area in question is semi-public.
