Sliedrecht is situated on the Beneden-Merwede River and brings together local history, waterscapes and various ways to explore the town in a compact area. Historical traces can be found on guided walks, in museums and at important buildings; at the same time, paths lead through parks, polder landscapes and natural areas.

Culture and Local History

The Struikelstenen Sliedrecht walking route passes all the Stolpersteine laid in Sliedrecht and provides an opportunity to discover the town's history. The Sliedrechts Museum offers a broader historical perspective: it features a permanent exhibition and regularly changing exhibitions about Sliedrecht, presenting the history of Sliedrecht from the year 1000 to the present day in words and images.

The Sliedrechts Museum in Kerkbuurt is a Rijksmonument. The building includes the former town hall and the former district court. The Nationaal Baggermuseum is also housed in a historic building on Molendijk in Sliedrecht. It presents the present and past of the dredging industry in Sliedrecht.

Another prominent testament to the town's history is the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk. As far as is known, it is considered Sliedrecht's oldest building and has Rijksmonument status. The oldest elements of its foundations date from before 1000.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Monumentenroute in Sliedrecht is 14 km long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. It can be shortened at several points. This means that the route length can be varied while retaining its focus on the town's monuments.

The Struikelstenen walking route is also available in different variants: it can be walked as a 7.5 km or 11.5 km route. Without using public transport, it can be 14.5 km long. The long section of the Struikelstenen route uses a train for the return journey from Baanhoek station to Sliedrecht station, the starting station. Thus, in addition to the Stolpersteine and their history, the route variants described also include different distances and the journey between the stations.

Water and Landscape

The municipality recommends using the Waterbus and combining a walk with a trip on the water. The Merwelanden area and De Biesbosch National Park are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. De Biesbosch National Park is regarded as a landscape consisting of a maze of waterways, willow forests, reed beds and hidden riverine nature.

The area around the Alblasserwaard is a polder landscape with extensive meadows, beautiful natural scenery, and characteristic farmhouses and villages. These landscapes complement the water-oriented character of the Beneden-Merwede with open pastureland and rural architecture.

Parks and Playful Places

The Dr. W. Dreespark provides space for walking in green surroundings. The Burgemeester Feitsmapark has a petting zoo. At the BaggerPraktijkTuin, young visitors can get involved themselves and discover various hydraulic engineering techniques in a playful way.

The park in question has a skate park; a continuous cycle route and walking paths also run through it. It contains natural areas of great importance, particularly the vegetation along the water and the wooded areas.
