Noordwijk combines a 13-kilometre sandy beach with dune landscapes, museums and extraordinary insights into space travel and history. Between the coast, wooded areas and the surrounding towns, a varied picture emerges, ranging from the coastal waters to historic churches and regional traditions.

Coast and Nature

Noordwijk has a 13-kilometre sandy beach. The coastal waters of Noordwijk offer opportunities for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, kitesurfing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing and rafting. At the same time, Noordwijk lies in the middle of Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen. Cycle routes run along the coast as well as through dunes, forests and villages.

Hollands Duin lies between Noordwijk and Noordwijkerhout. Broad dune paths run through the area, offering views of the beach, sea and spring fields of flower bulbs. The Coepelduynen have been preserved as a protected natural area with open dunes and vegetated sections. Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen also includes Landgoed Nieuw Leeuwenhorst, which is also known as Leeuwenhorstbos. The woodland area includes winding paths, open fields and historic features.

The Oosterduinse Meer, also called Comomeer, is located nearby. It is a bathing lake in Noordwijkerhout where people can swim, relax and enjoy nature. The Waterleidingduinen can be accessed from De Zilk.

Culture and History

The museums of Noordwijk cover a wide range of topics. Museum Noordwijk displays traditional costumes, Delftware and works by artists such as Oswald Wenckebach and Charlotte van Pallandt. Streekmuseum Veldzicht focuses on the cultivation of flower bulbs and herbs as well as the Blaarkop cattle breed. Its grounds include two historic herb gardens, a flower and flower-bulb garden, and a flower-picking garden. Workshops and lectures are regularly held in the flower-bulb barn and the stable.

Atlantikwall Museum Noordwijk displays bunkers from the Second World War, an exhibition and a tunnel system. These areas explain life in the bunkers and the transformation of the European coast into a fortress by the Germans. The fire-control bunker can be visited independently with an audio guide, while the tunnel system can be visited with a guide.

Museum Engelandvaarders tells the story of young men and women who fled the occupied Netherlands during the Second World War to continue the fight from Great Britain. Museum NoVaTo presents the local history of Noordwijkerhout. On Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard, Noordwijks Walk of Space displays the handprints and footprints of famous astronauts in the paving stones; the installation has been there since 2013.

Space Travel and Special Places

Space Expo is the visitor centre of ESA ESTEC in Noordwijk in the Netherlands and also an interactive experience for curious children and adults. Visitors can touch a real meteorite, walk through a model of the International Space Station ISS and view André Kuipers's original Soyuz capsule.

Another distinctive building is Vuurtoren Noordwijk. On thematically designed floors, the lighthouse conveys its history and addresses its former important connection to the rescue society. In spring, summer and autumn, Vuurtoren Noordwijk is open to visitors every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In Noordwijkerhout, the Witte Kerk stands as a monumental church in the centre of the town. A stone church with a Romanesque choir was built at the Witte Kerk in the first half of the 13th century. Today, it is open for viewing and reflection on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.; during the summer season, there are additional opening hours on special days.

Flowers, Festivals and Discoveries

The connection with flower-bulb culture is also reflected in events. During Corsoweek, the free-to-visit Flower Event takes place in the Witte Kerk on the village square of Noordwijkerhout. Colourful flower mosaics return to De Zilk every year. During Carnival, the De Duinknijnen carnival association in De Zilk designs several floats every year.

At De Dierenhoeve farm in Noordwijkerhout, children can play and feed the animals. Thus, alongside space travel, coastal landscapes and regional history, the programme also includes vivid insights into the surrounding area.
