The open peat pasture landscape of Midden-Delfland was awarded the status of “Special Provincial Landscape” in 2017. At the same time, Midden-Delfland is one of the oldest polder areas in the Netherlands. Polders with straight ditches, winding dikes and monumental farmhouses have been preserved. The nature areas consist mainly of expansive polders with cows, meadow birds and flowers. In the heart of Midden-Delfland lies the duck decoy Het Aalkeetbuiten. Along the path near this duck decoy, foresters explain how a duck decoy works and why absolute quiet is required there.

Culture and History

Op Hodenpijl combines several functions in one place: it is a cultural church, a restaurant and a centre for health and well-being. The church offers a programme of concerts, lectures and meditation sessions. In the quiet area behind Op Hodenpijl, there is a barefoot path and a labyrinth; walking meditation is possible there.

The museums also preserve various chapters of the region’s history. Museum Het Tramstation is located in a former railway station of the Westlandsche Stoomtramweg Maatschappij (WSM). The building retains a completely preserved interior with an Art Nouveau waiting hall and is a young listed national monument. In the museum’s Keenenburg Room, the history of the castle and its inhabitants is presented, and artefacts from the excavations are displayed. The re-covered foundations of the castle form an archaeological monument.

Museum De Schilpen displays rooms furnished in the period from 1900 to 1950. These include equipment used for making butter and cheese on the farm, as well as agricultural tools typical of the region. The museum also has a shop with original furnishings from the early 20th century. By appointment, Museum De Schilpen offers guided tours and village walks.

Paths Through the Landscape

The KERKenPADEN booklet covers ten churches, some of them former churches, as well as 21 existing and vanished church paths in Schipluiden, Maasland, Den Hoorn and ’t Woudt. It offers four walking routes ranging from 6.5 to 9 kilometres in length and also includes a cycling route of approximately 32 kilometres. Midden-Delfland has five permanent farm walking trails, sections of which cross farmland. In addition, there is a growing number of unpaved paths along waterways and through pastureland.

The Hof van Delfland walking route network uses 440 route posts and 110 information boards. One farm walking trail leads around the Rodenburg family farm through the expansive polders of Midden-Delfland. On another farm walking trail, visitors are guests of farmer Sonneveld, who is committed to protecting meadow birds. Thus, alongside the open landscape, the trails also focus on agricultural farms and the protection of meadow birds.

Water, Cycling and Farm Shops

The boating network of Midden-Delfland is designed for canoes, sloops and small cabin boats. Guided boat trips through the polders offer an opportunity to discover the historic heritage of Midden-Delfland. The Delflandse Trekvaarten route map includes walking, cycling and boating routes that allow visitors to discover the history of the Delflandse Trekvaarten and the transport of goods and passengers by trekschuit.

Cycling options in Midden-Delfland include Toeristische Overstap Punten (TOP), routes developed by partners, options for e-bike riders and a ferry route. A cycling route by Natuurmonumenten presents the landscape of Midden-Delfland through the perspective of the artists of the Hague School. The farm shops of Midden-Delfland offer cheese, dairy products, meat, eggs, vegetables and fruit.
