Nature and landscape

The Heemtuin Krimpen in Krimpen aan den IJssel covers 2 hectares and features bluegrass meadows, marsh marigold meadows, an orchid field, an alder carr forest and a dike lined with pollard willows. A circular walk of less than 1 kilometre leads through these landscape elements and provides access to characteristic areas of the Krimpenerwaard.

In the area around Krimpen aan den IJssel, south of the town centre near the N210 provincial road, lies the Krimpenerhout recreational area. It includes recreational woodland, marshland zones and ponds and is crossed by paths for pedestrians and cyclists. North of the N210, the smaller wooded areas of Lansing Zuid and EZH Bos are located within Krimpenerhout. This area also has the 1.1-kilometre-long “Groen voor iedereen” route, which is suitable for people using a walking frame, wheelchair or other assistance. Krimpenerhout offers opportunities for swimming, surfing and sport fishing; on the eastern side there is a separate dog beach and a water playground.

The Stormpoldervloedbos is a 9-hectare nature reserve outside the dikes in the Nieuwe Maas near Krimpen aan den IJssel. Channels run through the area and fill and empty twice a day with the rhythm of the tides. Kingfishers, green and great spotted woodpeckers, various species of geese and ducks, and birds of prey can be found in the Stormpoldervloedbos.

Paths and historic landscape

The historic walk in Lansingh-Zuid consists of three short walks of approximately 2 kilometres each and is described as a combined 6-kilometre route. The Lansingh-Zuid walk is also easily accessible by wheelchair or with a pushchair. Its historic surroundings include the preserved Lansing-Kade, an old land boundary between two polders.

The nature reserve in the area of the historic walk in Lansingh-Zuid in some respects resembles the way it was until around the 11th century, before the Krimpenerwaard was reclaimed. It is criss-crossed by ditches and drainage channels that regulated the water level.

Culture and history

The Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard is located in a monumental 17th-century farmhouse of the “Hallehuis” type. The museum covers regional themes such as inland shipping, brickworks and rope-making; there is also an old “Ot en Sien” classroom. The Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard, its grounds and museum are open for cultural encounters, educational programmes, celebrations and workshops. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 14:00 to 17:00.

The Scheepswerf Van Duijvendijk complex on the IJsseldijk in Krimpen aan den IJssel consists of a residential building and two wooden sheds. A shipyard has been documented at this location in Krimpen aan den IJssel as early as 1622. The complex has cultural and historical value as a rare surviving example of an industry that was once widespread along the major rivers.

Nature education and leisure

Kinderboerderij Klein Boveneind is a publicly accessible leisure facility that combines nature education with recreation and encounters with farm animals. Visitors can learn about farm animals, nature and the environment there. There is also an education centre for nature and environmental education.

Waterbus and regional routes

Waterbus line 20 operates between Dordrecht Merwekade and the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. Its stops are in Dordrecht, Papendrecht, Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Alblasserdam, Ridderkerk, Krimpen aan den IJssel, Capelle aan den IJssel and Rotterdam. In the wider regional area, the Krimpenerwaard cycling node network includes 45 nodes and 153 kilometres of cycle paths.
