At the Vermeer Centrum Delft, Johannes Vermeer takes center stage, along with his life, work, era and city. The information and experience center also displays high-quality, life-size reproductions of all Vermeer’s known works.

Culture and History

The Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk are vibrant cultural venues where exhibitions, concerts and lectures take place. The historic cityscape also includes the Oostpoort, the only surviving city gate of Delft’s original eight city gates. The Museum Paul Tétar van Elven on Koornmarkt offers a personal introduction to art history. It is located in the former home of the painter and passionate art collector Paul Tétar van Elven, who lived there until 1892.

The Royal Delft Museum also combines culture with hands-on activities. In workshops, visitors can learn about the production of Delft Blue pottery and paint their own tile. The Vermeer Centrum Delft also offers bookable guided tours, either at the center itself or in Delft with a focus on Vermeer.

Experiences and Views

You can climb the tower of the Nieuwe Kerk for a beautiful view. The windmill can also be visited from the inside, and its staircase can be climbed to enjoy a beautiful view. Built in 1679, the mill is the only surviving one of Delft’s original 18 windmills. A boat trip offers a different perspective on the city, allowing you to explore Delft via its picturesque canals.

The TU Delft Hortus Botanicus combines different ways to visit: options include self-guided or guided tropical tours, treasure hunts for children, workshops and exhibitions. The botanical garden is divided into an arboretum, a greenhouse complex, a central garden and a herb garden. Covering around 2.5 hectares, it contains approximately 7,000 special plant and tree species.

Nature and Landscape

Delftse Hout is a green recreational area on the outskirts of Delft. It offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and taking part in creative workshops. The Arboretum-Heempark is also located in the same recreational area. Buytenhout is nearby as well, a contiguous nature and recreational area between Delft, Zoetermeer and Pijnacker-Nootdorp.

Midden-Delfland is located directly next to Delft. The area offers extensive meadows, historic farmhouses and quiet dike paths. In addition to the cultural sites and canals, this means that open landscapes and paths are also available in the city’s immediate regional surroundings.

Getting There and Regional Routes

Delft railway station is located in the city center. From there, the market and other sights can be reached on foot in five minutes. HTM tram line 1 runs directly from The Hague and Rotterdam to Delft.

Online walking routes are available in Delft along hidden hotspots and well-known sights. A cycling tour through Hoek van Holland, Maassluis, Midden-Delfland, Delft and Westland leads to regional products such as Westland strawberries and grapes, farm cheese and orchids from a nursery.
