Keukenhof was conceived in 1949 as an exhibition of spring-flowering flower bulbs. Every year, 40 gardeners plant 7 million flower bulbs in the 32-hectare Keukenhof park. The park is home to 1,600 species of bulbous plants, including 800 tulip varieties, and has a total of 15 kilometres of walking paths.
The Keukenhof estate covers 260 hectares and includes 16 national heritage sites. The old dune landscape is still visible in the woodland area. The Keukenhof estate can be visited free of charge for walks; parking is also free. The mill at Keukenhof, dating from 1892, is an additional historic feature. Visitors to Keukenhof can enter and climb this mill free of charge and enjoy views over the park and the surrounding flower bulb fields.
The Keukenhofbos is also one of the distinctive landscape areas: this varied, hilly woodland is characterised by beech, oak and coniferous trees. The Kasteel Keukenhof estate also has a 750-metre-long gnome trail with 16 different gnome posts. The Laarzenpad leads through meadows and woodland around the Kasteel Keukenhof estate and can become very muddy after heavy rain.
Museums and Historic Places
Museum de Zwarte Tulp was established as a regional museum with tools and products that provide insights into the work of growers. It also houses the private Nieuwenhuis Collection, with more than 700 historical depictions of bulbous and tuberous plants. Thus, both the working world of cultivation and the visual representation of these plants are central to the museum.
The LAM Museum is located on the Keukenhof estate in Lisse and focuses on everyday topics such as food, drink and shopping. Its collection includes, among other things, 3D images, art installations, paintings, sound art and digital art on precisely these topics. Six Reuzenbollen artworks are located in the village centre of Lisse. Concerts and exhibitions are held at 't Huys Dever. Following the start of restoration in 1973, 't Huys Dever was opened to the public in 1978.
Filmhuis Lisse shows an arthouse film every Tuesday evening in the large hall of Floralis. Those who explore the local history on foot can find historical walking routes at Vereniging Oud Lisse, allowing them to discover Lisse's past. Historical routes created by the Cultuur-Historische Vereniging Oud Lisse pass distinctive landscapes, special buildings and notable places.
Paths Through the Landscape and Surrounding Area
Lisse is part of Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen. The Wandelnetwerk Bollenstreek comprises 100 kilometres of signposted paths; several routes lead from Lisse into the surrounding area. One of these is the Bloemenwandeling Lisse, an 8-kilometre walking route along flowering bulb fields, the Keukenhofbos and the grounds of Kasteel Keukenhof.
The Lisser Poelpolder is described as one of the oldest reclaimed areas in the Netherlands. Some of its walking paths are paved and others unpaved. This means that different path surfaces exist side by side within the landscape, without the character of the polder being limited to a single type of ground.
Water and Spring Festival
There are several marinas in Lisse along the Ringvaart. Several canoeing routes also run through the municipality of Lisse. The waterways therefore form a distinct part of the local landscape alongside the woodland areas, polder paths and flower bulb fields.
The Bloemencorso van de Bollenstreek is held as a five-day spring flower festival. The parade of the Bloemencorso van de Bollenstreek covers 42 kilometres. The event thus combines a festival held over a defined period with an extensive parade through the Bollenstreek.
