Capelle aan den IJssel showcases its distinctive features in historic townscapes, green parks, diverse paths and a vibrant cultural life. The municipality has 18 Rijksmonumenten, 57 municipal monuments and 6 protected townscapes. This creates a variety of facets side by side: the old village centre with its dike buildings, preserved grounds in Slotpark, a historic pumping station, nature-oriented gardens and routes along the Hollandsche IJssel.

Culture and Historical Traces

The Capelse Dorpskerk is a Rijksmonument. The protected townscape extends beyond the old village centre and the immediate surroundings of the Dorpskerk, and also includes around 250 metres of the Dorpsstraat with its historic dike buildings. Its southern boundary is the Hollandsche IJssel. In Slotpark, the island and the double castle moats have been preserved. The Dief-en-Duifhuisje has also been preserved.

The Jan Anne Beijerinckgemaal offers a special combination of technology, history and architecture. It has been a municipal monument since 24 November 2009 and is regarded as an object of historic value with special architecture. At the same time, it is considered the oldest still-operating electrically powered pumping station in the Netherlands. The pumping station is open to visitors on several days each year; on those days, the old engines run at full capacity.

The Van Cappellenhuis offers a cultural programme. The Regentenkamer has also been preserved in its original style. It was fully restored in 2021 and can be visited during Open Monumentendag in September. The Historical Association Capelle aan den IJssel is open from April to October on the second Saturday of each month from 13:00 to 16:00. A tour of the Slot takes place at 14:00.

Historical themes can also be discovered along various routes. The route along Capelle's monuments is a joint walking and cycling route of the municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel and the Historical Association Capelle aan den IJssel. The Historical Association also offers the „Groen van Toen“ cycling route.

Nature and Routes

Schollebos was created around 1980 as a green park area in the English landscape style. Together with the ’s-Gravenweggebied, it forms a green buffer zone between the Schollevaar, Middelwatering and Oostgaarde districts. A nature trail in Schollebos provides information along the way about the natural features visible in this nature area. There is also a bicycle motocross track for children in the same area.

The municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel has several designated walking and cycling routes. These include the signposted 50-kilometre cycling route from Gouda to Capelle. It runs along the Hollandsche IJssel and can also be cycled in sections. Another cycling route from Schollebos to the Rottemeren starts at the IJsseldijk and leads via Schollebos to Zevenhuizen. The „Natuurparels“ route enables geocaching, allowing visitors to discover Capelle aan den IJssel's natural treasures.

Heemtuin Capelle aan den IJssel has an extensive network of paths made from wood chips. It is home to special plants, trees, insects and, above all, fungi; many trees and plants are labelled. Heemtuin is freely accessible and free of charge. Kinderboerderij Klaverweide offers another way to enjoy nature and social interaction. Since 1975, it has been a place in Capelle aan den IJssel where young and old can experience animals, nature and social interaction.

The journey to CNME De Hooiberg is also described in detail: by metro, the facility can be reached as far as the De Terp stop. When arriving by car, visitors can park at Purmerhoek and walk from there through the tunnel beneath Abram van Rijckevorselweg to the facility in three minutes.

Music and Cultural Life

CAPSLOC organises various concerts and offers a broad programme of pop music and pop culture. At the same time, CAPSLOC is a creative talent incubator and a springboard for young musical talents. The venue thus complements the historic attractions and green routes with a contemporary cultural focus.
