Papendrecht: Art, Nature and 900 Years of History

Papendrecht lies on the Merwede River. The municipality of Papendrecht considers the Dijklint to be the origin of Papendrecht. The dikes along the rivers are part of Papendrecht’s historic and maritime landscape and tell 900 years of history.

Landscape and History

A walking route runs along the Beneden Merwede, where the first houses of Papendrecht were once built. The Papendrecht section of the Alblasserbos is located in the Vriesenpolder. A late-medieval huisterp is located on Edelweisslaan, while the monument there is of scientific and cultural-historical significance. A Marechaussee barracks was built on the western side of the Veerdam in 1920.

Routes and Nature

The Nature Route in Papendrecht leads to 22 special plant and animal species found in the municipality. A free route map leads along the Nature Route to several locations throughout Papendrecht; the route can be used on foot or by bicycle. Along the Nature Route, visitors can scan QR codes, watch short videos and answer quiz questions.

The “Along Water, Art and History” walking route in Papendrecht is 8.5 kilometres long. The Streeknatuurcentrum Alblasserwaard offers walking and cycling routes for tours through the Alblasserwaard. Guided nature walks take place in the Heemtuin of the Streeknatuurcentrum Alblasserwaard, explaining the landscapes, flora and fauna of the Alblasserwaard. The Kinderboerderij Papenhoeve has, among other animals, goats, alpacas, pigs and ponies, and offers educational programmes for schools and associations, including animal care.

Art and Culture

More than 40 works of art can be found in the streets and squares of the municipality of Papendrecht. Kunst voor Papendrecht offers a cycling and walking route along which visitors can view the municipality’s works of art.

The Beeldenpark Drechtoevers is a permanent exhibition of large sculptures on the banks of the Oude Maas, the Beneden Merwede and the Noord. It was conceived as a living museum of large sculptures along the river corridor. QR codes on the information panels at Beeldenpark Drechtoevers provide information about the sculptures and their artists. One route offers background information about the sculptures as well as questions and activities for children.

The small hall of the Dorpsbehoud Museum houses, among other things, the old clock mechanism from the Grote Kerk. The Lancasterzaal of the Dorpsbehoud Museum contains, among other things, documents and objects from 1944 relating to the crash of the “Popeye” bomber and its crew. Theater De Willem presents a varied programme with more than 100 performances per year; in Papendrecht, it publishes a programme with tickets for performances. The Stichting Historische Verbrandingsmotoren Papendrecht houses a special collection of historic internal combustion engines, many of which can be viewed in operation.
