Culture by the Water

Papendrecht brings art and riverside landscapes together: Beeldenpark Drechtoevers is a permanent exhibition of large sculptures along the banks of the Oude Maas, the Beneden Merwede and the Noord. Queen Beatrix opened the Beeldenpark Drechtoevers sculpture park in 1996.

Papendrecht’s maritime heritage includes historic shipyards, water-related industries, the construction of small boats and yachts, and ship repairs on the Beneden Merwede. The De Willem theatre also adds a cultural touch and offers a varied annual programme with more than one hundred performances.

History at the Museum

The Stichting Dorpsbehoud Papendrecht Museum was established in the central section of a Marechaussee barracks built on the west side of the Veerdam in 1920. The museum is open to visitors on Saturdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The small hall houses the old tower clock mechanism from the Grote Kerk; the bell of this church was made in 1375.

In the Lancasterzaal, the museum preserves documents and objects from the “Popeye” bomber, which crashed in 1944, and its crew. Thus, the same building brings together architectural history, church history and the memory of a wartime event. The two rooms focus on different aspects of history: the tower clock mechanism refers to the Grote Kerk, while the Lancasterzaal is dedicated to the aircraft and its crew. When visiting the museum, current opening hours should be checked before travelling.

Nature and Landscape

The Natuurroute Icoonsoorten Papendrecht leads to 22 distinctive plant and animal species found in Papendrecht. The route can be explored on foot or by bicycle using a free route map. Along the way, visitors can scan QR codes, watch short videos and answer quiz questions. In this way, the route combines the selection of species with travel on foot or by bicycle; QR codes, videos and quiz questions add digital and interactive stations to the route. For a tour by bicycle or on foot, current route conditions should be checked before setting out.

The Streekmuseum of “Natuur en Vogelwacht De Alblasserwaard” informs visitors about the natural and landscape values of the so-called peat meadow area. The museum also hosts lectures, gatherings and exhibitions. Near the entrance to the Alblasserbos, visitors can take a walk through a Heemtuin and view miniature versions of landscape features from the former Alblasserwaard.

Walks along the Rivers

The walking route along water, art and the past runs largely along the Beneden Merwede. The first houses in Papendrecht were once built on this river. From the Aviolandapad, the walk offers an impressive view of Dordrecht and Zwijndrecht, as well as of the ships at the confluence of the three rivers.

The Slobbengorsbrug is also part of the history by the water. After the original bridge over the de Gantel river was replaced in 2013, its old steel structure, lifting mechanism and ballast box were rebuilt in the same form and colour.

At the Marina

Right next to Papendrecht Marina are a regional bus stop and a Waterbus landing stage for services to Dordrecht and Sliedrecht.
