Lisse: Keukenhof, Art and Tulip Culture

When you visit the historic gardens of Keukenhof, you can see authentic tulips from the 16th and 17th centuries, illustrating 400 years of tulip cultivation in the Netherlands. Keukenhof is a historic park covering 32 hectares. Around seven million flowering tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and other bulbous plants can be seen there.

Culture

Keukenhof offers a 45-minute trip in an electrically powered whisper boat. The trip includes an audio tour of the Bollenstreek flower-bulb region. The De Zwarte Tulp Museum is dedicated to the cultivation of flower bulbs and the art inspired by it.

The museum is located in a former bulb barn in the centre of Lisse. It has a seasonal museum garden featuring bulbous plants. ’t Huys Dever in Lisse is a medieval fortified residential tower, known as a donjon. This donjon was built in the distinctive shape of the letter D.

’t Huys Dever is open to visitors from Wednesday to Sunday, from 14:00 to 17:00. The Keukenhof estate is open daily from 08:30 to 19:30. Access to the estate and parking are free of charge.

With advance reservation, Kasteel Keukenhof offers 90-minute guided tours in Dutch. The tours take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 and 15:30.

Cycling

In and around Lisse, visitors can put together routes thanks to an extensive cycle-node network. The desired distance and their own pace serve as guidelines. The Haarlemroute starts in Lisse and leads via Hillegom and Bennebroek towards Haarlem. It then returns to Lisse through the wooded dunes.

The historical connections are thus spread across horticulture, architecture and art. At Keukenhof, the focus is on tulips and bulbous plants, while De Zwarte Tulp combines the cultivation of flower bulbs with the art inspired by it. The seasonal museum garden in the former bulb barn is also part of this theme.
