The Slikken van Flakkee are part of the Grevelingen Natura 2000 area and an important habitat for breeding and wintering birds. Staatsbosbeheer manages approximately 700 hectares of nature on Goeree-Overflakkee. In the Kwade Hoek, there are transitions from salt water to brackish and fresh water; almost 300 plant species can be discovered there.
The Kwade Hoek is also an important breeding area where visitors can observe, among other birds, lapwings, skylarks, stonechats, avocets and oystercatchers. The kilometre-long Koploper hiking route passes through this area along mudflats, salt marshes and winding creeks.
The Hellegat-Ventjager Bird Boulevard includes four birdwatching huts and the Torenvalk observation tower, with views of the Haringvliet or Krammer-Volkerak. Marsh harriers, bluethroats, spoonbills and even white-tailed eagles can be observed there. The Tij Bird Observatory can be reached via a walk through the reed beds and bushes of the Scheelhoek and offers views across the Haringvliet and of small islands where common terns breed.
History and Culture
Goeree-Overflakkee’s rich heritage is evident in its landscapes, buildings and villages, as well as in a former town. The Streekmuseum Goeree-Overflakkee presents 2,000 years of island history in 19 historic rooms and exhibition spaces.
At the Menheerse Werf, visitors can watch the ongoing restoration of the only surviving Beugsloep and set the ebb and flow of the tides themselves on a tide table for the Haringvliet. The former shipbuilding workshop of the fishing village of “Menheerse” is open to visitors and conveys the history of shipyards, fishermen and beam trawling from the time when Middelharnis was still a genuine fishing village.
The RTM Museum on the northern side of the Brouwersdam has a collection of steam and diesel locomotives that are still in operation. During a ride in a swaying carriage, visitors can look out over Lake Grevelingen while the conductors talk about the Rotterdamsche Tramweg Maatschappij.
The development of the region is also part of its historical image: the construction of the Delta Works made it much more accessible by road; beach tourism on both islands then increased sharply from the 1960s onwards.
Active Exploration
At the Scheelhoek, there are green walking routes in short and long versions, as well as a mountain biking route. Among others, great spotted woodpeckers, nightingales, blackcaps and various species of tits breed in the woodland. The different route lengths and activity types help organise your daily plans between a walk and a cycling route.
Kitesurfing, windsurfing, foilsurfing, wing foiling, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing are all possible on Goeree-Overflakkee. Visitors can also learn kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing and wing foiling there; at the Zeil- en surfcentrum Brouwersdam, the fundamentals of windsurfing are taught in a calm basin.
For cycling tours, Goeree-Overflakkee has a cycle junction network that can be used to plan your own cycling routes, as well as numerous themed routes. In addition, there are 13 marinas and numerous recreational moorings.
Culinary Delights by the Sea
Smaak aan Zee comprises two recurring food truck festivals by the sea, featuring street food, music and entertainment. The annual Smaak aan Zee food truck festival on the grounds of Beachclub 't Gorsje features more than 25 food trucks, music and entertainment, as well as views across the North Sea; the offerings range from regional dishes to Japanese sushi and pizza.
