Panningen: Church, Weekly Market and Rural Paths

Panningen combines local history with cultural destinations and routes into the rural surroundings. In the old center, on the edge of the built-up area and throughout the municipality of Peel en Maas, you will find a variety of themes for a trip at your own pace.

Culture and Pilgrimage in the Village Center

The Onze Lieve Vrouw van Zeven Smarten parish church stands on a narrow, elongated plot between Kerkstraat and Pastoor Huijbenplein in the old center of Panningen. H.W. Valk built it in 1930 in collaboration with the parish priest and builder J.H. Huijben. The history of the village also includes the Kloosterkapel, with its adjoining sacristy and former burial chapel, which forms part of a monastery complex in the center. The chapel was built in 1907 and consecrated on April 28, 1908.

A special detail is its rare neo-Gothic organ from 1912, made in the Paris workshop of A. Cavaillé-Coll and Ch. Mutin. Panningen’s pilgrimage tradition to Onze Lieve Vrouw van Zeven Smarten began with the construction of a pilgrimage chapel in 1638 and attracted pilgrims from the wider surrounding area.

Chapels and Ringoven

The Odiliakapel stands on the edge of the built-up area at the intersection of Beekstraat and Zandbergweg; there is a bench directly beside it. It dates from 1864 and was restored in 1984. Inside, the red brickwork is left exposed; an image of Saint Odilia stands on an altar behind reflective Plexiglas.

On the western edge of Panningen stands the Ringoven, a former ring-kiln building designed in 1909. The facility remained in operation until the beginning of the 1990s and was then considered the last traditionally operating ring-kiln facility in Limburg. Today, De Ringoven is a restaurant in the former Heldensche Steenfabriek brickworks in Panningen.

Market, DOK6 and Regional Orientation

The Panningen weekly market takes place every Wednesday from 09:00 to 16:00. DOK6 is located in the center and includes a theater, service cinema, café with restaurant, foyer and business lounge. VVV Panningen offers a selection of cycling and walking routes as well as local and regional products. This makes it possible to combine culture, local life and your own ideas for the day.

The Nature Walk Panningen leads from the industrial area into the rural surroundings of Panningen. The IVN cycling tour program in Peel en Maas takes you to notable and monumental trees and also focuses along the way on art, the landscape and the stories behind the trees.

Five IVN Routes

There are five cycling tours designated by IVN in the municipality of Peel en Maas that visit these trees. These tours are connected with Helden, Panningen, Egchel, Grashoek, Koningslust and Beringe.
