Between the Peel Landscape and Local History

Grashoek lies between fields and forests. The area was reclaimed from a Peel region with a great deal of peat in the soil. In the Marisberg-Belgenhoek area between Grashoek and the Peel, coniferous forest and drifting sand shape the landscape.

Scherliet is a small nature reserve along the Helenavaart west of Grashoek; it contains woodland, grassland and, in places, distinctive vegetation. The 13.5 km Struinpad trail runs through the Verheven Peel, passing through and alongside old Peel remnants, peat canals, areas of scrub, wet meadows and forests. Nature enthusiasts can experience different landscape forms here within the Peel theme.

Cycling and Walking Routes

The Schorfroute begins in Grashoek at cycle junction 21 and heads towards junction 12. It passes through wooded sandy soils and the open, agriculturally dominated fields of the Peel landscape. The route passes canals and waterways that were constructed in the 19th century to drain the Peel and transport peat. At cycle junction 8, the Schorfroute reaches the boundary of De Groote Peel National Park. Five cycling tours have been designated in the municipality of Peel en Maas; they are connected with Helden, Panningen, Egchel, Grashoek, Koningslust and Beringe.

There are also specific walking routes of different lengths. A 9.4 km walking route in Grashoek runs along the Groote Molenbeek and begins and ends at walking junction 25. Another walking route is 5.4 km long and also begins and ends at walking junction 25. The different distances provide you with a clear basis for planning your walking days according to length and focus.

Golfdomein Kapelkeshof has a 21-hole golf course. It consists of an 18-hole par-3 course and a 9-hole par-3/4 course. Golf therefore adds another way to enjoy your stay in Grashoek to the nature and route themes.

Memorial Sites and Cultural Traces

The De Ankerplaats community centre at Pastoor Vullinghsstraat 3 features the „Sporen die bleven“ memorial plaque. The monument of the same name in Grashoek commemorates the raids in October and November 1944. During these raids, the occupying forces deported more than 3,000 boys and men for forced labour in the German war industry. The „Lancaster-monument“ commemorates the seven-member crew of Lancaster ED-973 of the RAF's 100 Squadron.

Other traces range from regional prehistory to the origins of the village. The „sierschijf van Helden“, also known as a Celtic disc, was found in 1844 in the area of the later Grashoek and dates from the 1st century AD. 1918 is considered the unofficial founding date of Grashoek. Around the middle of the 19th century, the first farmers built simple farms in the area between Beringe and Helenaveen, which included the later Grashoek area. The „Kippen“ sculpture in Grashoek is a work by artist Wim Kömhoff and depicts stylised representations of a chicken, a rooster and an egg. The Mariakapel Roomweg was built in 1930 by Mr Engelen as a wayside altar during the annual procession.
