Castles, watermill and art

Baarlo has four castles, three of which date back to the Middle Ages; routes pass by these four castles in the town. Kasteel d’Erp dates from the 13th century and was originally a genuine castle. It belongs to the historic d’Erp estate and is of general architectural and cultural-historical significance. Kasteel de Raay was originally a 13th-century knight’s manor, while Kasteel de Berkt is located within a moated enclosure.

Baarlo’s watermill also tells stories of earlier times: its origins date back to the Middle Ages, the present building dates from the 18th century and it was restored in 1977. The mill stands where the Kwistbeek leaves the Meuse terrace and makes use of the difference in elevation between the Kwistbeek and the Bosbeek. At the entrance to the town stands the sculpture “Connection” by Shinkichi Tajiri from 1991. It is made of cast iron and is 600 cm high. Around the market square, the oude wasplaats is also one of the historic sights.

Paths through the village and forest

A beeldenroute, a sculpture trail through the village, runs through Baarlo. In Baarlo, you can walk through green forests. A guided, 8 km-long hike through a forest leads to a memorial column for the Bospartisans in the forests of Baarlo. The monument at the former partisan camp commemorates partisan life in the forests of Baarlo during the final months of the occupation.
