Horst showcases a varied side of Limburg: Kasteel Huys ter Horst combines medieval history with a woodland setting, museums focus on textiles and the regional baking tradition, and special experiences range from optical illusions to a strawberry-themed park. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Horst, you can therefore tailor your trip to a wide variety of interests – from culture and crafts to nature and family adventures.

Castles, Forest and History

The history of Kasteel Huys ter Horst dates back to the 13th century. The complex began as a refuge castle with a donjon, meaning a residential tower. The building rises above the Kasteelse Bossen. These woods were formerly the estate forest of Huys or Kasteel Ter Horst and cover approximately 100 hectares. Special plants and animals find a habitat in and around the ruins. This excursion destination therefore brings together traces of history and a diverse natural environment.

Museums and Special Interiors

Museum de Kantfabriek is housed in the former Zuid-Nederlandse Kantfabriek. It presents the textile history of Noord-Limburg with working machines and a unique collection of textile art. The museum offers courses and workshops in textiles and crafts for beginners and advanced participants. The Sint-Lambertuskerk is a work by Maastricht architect Alphons Boosten (1893–1951) and was officially designated a Rijksmonument in February 2016. It is the only church in the Netherlands with an atrium. Its crypt houses the Schatkamer van Horst.

During guided tours of the Sint-Lambertuskerk, you can view the saint statues, other art treasures, the Schatkamer, the crypt and the exhibition in the atrium. While the church is open from May to October, the art treasures can be viewed on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. This gives the church a clearly defined cultural appointment for your planning.

Experiences for Different Age Groups

Mind Mystery is an experience museum in Horst in North Limburg that focuses on optical illusions. Visitor experiences include a mirror maze and an Ames room, in which you appear to become smaller and larger. Het Aardbeienland is a strawberry-themed park in Horst aan de Maas dedicated to the strawberry and aimed primarily at families with children. Because of its limited daily visitor capacity, Het Aardbeienland works with time slots.

Trails, Forest and Family Adventures

The Ridders- en Roverspad is a 2.5-kilometre adventure hiking trail through the Kasteelse Bossen and starts at Kasteel Huys ter Horst. A free app that can be installed supports the trail with three themes. For children aged 4 to 8, the Riddertocht is designed as an adventurous treasure hunt. In addition, the approximately three-kilometre Erfgoed Route Limburg ends at Museum de Kantfabriek. The different trail lengths help you choose either a shorter family walk or a longer route with a cultural focus.

Vlaai and Craft Tradition

The Limburgse Vlaaibakkerij Museum presents the history behind Limburgse vlaai. For groups of 10 or more, it offers guided workshops on baking Limburgse vlaai; participants may take their homemade products home with them. This gives the regional speciality a practical, communal side alongside its history.
