Meterik between windmill, village history and nature trails
Meterik combines a clearly recognizable village history with trails through woodland, fields and stream landscapes. The village’s history includes the “Eendracht Maakt Macht” windmill, built in 1899, the R.K. Church of St. John the Evangelist as a Rijksmonument, and the old village center with its designated protected village setting. Nature trails lead through the Schadijkse bossen and along the Kabroekse Beek.
The “Eendracht Maakt Macht” windmill was built in Meterik in 1899. Volunteer millers operate it regularly. Thus, in addition to its historic year of construction, the mill in Meterik is also characterized by regular operation by volunteer millers.
Village history in prominent buildings
The R.K. Church of St. John the Evangelist in Meterik is a Rijksmonument. In 1907, it was converted from a hall church built between 1899 and 1900 into a neo-Gothic cruciform church. The church therefore combines a hall church dating from around 1900 with the later neo-Gothic conversion.
The old village center of Meterik, at the intersection of Schadijkerweg and Sint Jansstraat/Crommentuijnstraat, is designated as a protected village setting. The former “Theresia” convent was built around 1925 and is a defining feature of Meterik. Its historic status is explicitly retained: “Theresia” is referred to as a former convent.
Walking trails through woodland and stream landscapes
The Ommetje Schadijkerpad Meterik is a signposted, 8-kilometer walking trail. It runs along a stream and through fields and woodland.
Along the Boswachterspad Schadijkse bossen, there are several benches and seating areas, so breaks can be specifically planned into this route.
In the Schadijkse bossen, you will find old drifting dunes, heathland and woodland edges. With a little luck, red-backed shrikes, black woodpeckers and roe deer can be spotted along the trail through the Schadijkse bossen. Nature observation remains connected to these landscape features of the area.
The Kabroekse Beek is 9 kilometers long; a great diversity of flora and fauna has developed in and around the stream in recent years. The Schadijkerpad runs along the Kabroeksebeek and through a centuries-old arable farming area. Along this section, the stream and the centuries-old arable farming area are two distinct landscape features associated with the trail.
Cycling route and different distances
The 33-kilometer Fietsroute De Locht follows farm tracks and country roads past the “Eendracht maakt Macht” windmill in Meterik. Compared with the 8-kilometer Ommetje Schadijkerpad Meterik, it covers a considerably longer distance. The two routes also differ in their course: the Ommetje runs along streams, fields and woodland, while De Locht connects farm tracks and country roads with the windmill site.
For planning a day in Meterik, this results in two specific route profiles. The signposted walking trail and the longer Fietsroute each specify a fixed distance, different trail sections and their own landscape features. This keeps the windmill, stream, fields, woodland, farm tracks and country roads linked to the route on which they are described.
