Holiday apartments in Lingewaard between rivers and World Heritage sites

Lingewaard lies in the east of the Gelderland river region and is enclosed by the Waal and Nederrijn rivers. The municipality is home to the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the New Dutch Water Line and the Roman Limes; both have been World Heritage sites since 2021. Lingewaard has floodplains and historic sites.

Landscape

Lingewaard’s green and natural heritage includes floodplains, orchards, the Klompenpad in Ressen, the Linge and the Gendtse Polder. From the roof of Fort Pannerden, there are views over the Waal, the Rhine and the Pannerdensch Kanaal. In Lingewaard, you can also cycle along the Waal, the Pannerdensch Kanaal and the Linge.

Culture and history

Lingewaard’s historic character ranges from medieval castles to water defence structures. Kasteel Doornenburg is a medieval castle with an upper and lower castle, connected by a wooden bridge. On the first floor, there is an exhibition about the castle’s role during this turbulent period in history. The lower castle and the hiking trail around Kasteel Doornenburg are freely accessible all year round.

Fort Pannerden is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the New Dutch Water Line. Fortverhalen is a self-guided tour through the tunnel system of Fort Pannerden. The Grachtentour at Fort Pannerden includes a visit to one of seven casemates or bunkers. In Ressen, Kasteelterrein Ressen, also known as Bos Idylle, preserves reconstructed foundation outlines of Huis te Ressen. The church in Ressen is considered one of the oldest churches in the Netherlands.

At the Zeegsepad, the Oude Postweg is a preserved section of the former centuries-old post road between Arnhem and Nijmegen. The Streekmuseum Lingewaard makes the local heritage accessible through publications and cooperation with authorities to protect this heritage; there is no physical museum.

Hiking

A hiking network covering almost 150 kilometres has been developed in Lingewaard. You can also go hiking on Klompenpaden. The short walks listed in Park Lingezegen are between 1.5 and 8 kilometres long. One longer route is the 11-kilometre Zeegsepad, which runs through the rural surroundings of Ressen and Lent.

Cycling

For cycling tours, Rondje Lingewaard is a 31.5-kilometre circular cycling route through the municipality of Lingewaard. The route follows the cycle junction network. Other sections of the cycling network run along the Waal, the Pannerdensch Kanaal and the Linge.

Traditions and products

Every year on 29 June, the Huissense Gilden reenact the siege and relief of Huissen. The Kersenfeest is considered a local tradition in Lingewaard. Fruit cultivation is also associated with specific activities. De Woerdt organises apple-picking days, tastings, excursions and workshops. Apples, pears, cherries, sour cherries and plums are sold at Fruitbedrijf en Landgoedwinkel De Woerdt.
