Holiday apartment in Rheden: Veluwezoom and historic country estates
Rheden combines the expansive landscape of Nationaal Park Veluwezoom with historic country estates, special cultural sites and a wide range of experiences. The national park covers more than 5,200 hectares and features forests, heathland, shifting sands and stately country estates. Hiking and cycling are possible in Nationaal Park Veluwezoom; there is also an extensive network of mountain bike routes and bridleways.
Nature
The Heuven-Beekhuizen hiking route is particularly varied. It leads through the Heuven and Beekhuizen country estates, through woodland, along bodies of water and beside the Beekhuizense beek. The forests of Landgoed Hof te Dieren, Landgoed Middachten and Natuurmonumenten also form a contiguous area suitable for hiking. In Laag-Soeren, there is a wildlife observation point where visitors can watch wild animals.
The Middachter Allee, a beech avenue dating from 1751, is another feature of the landscape. The Velperwaarden form an important connection for many animals between the IJssel and the Veluwe. Floodplain grassland is managed there, and the ecological quality of the stream is being improved. Bezoekerscentrum Veluwezoom is located near Rheden railway station; the Posbank is within walking distance.
Culture
Kasteel Middachten is open to visitors. Guided tours are organised on request, and on Sunday afternoons the castle is open to visitors in June, July and August. Landgoed Middachten also hosts concerts, lectures, festivals and markets. The Middachter Allee complements this historic setting with its clearly dated beech planting.
Landgoed Hof te Dieren also reflects several historical periods. The estate was owned by the royal family in the 17th and 18th centuries. Every year, it offers a limited number of guided tours of its monumental park for small groups. In Dieren, Liberation Route Europe listening stone No. 24 at the lock on the Apeldoorns Kanaal commemorates events from the Second World War.
Rheden is home to the originally Romanesque Dorpskerk, with a medieval tower, a nave dating from around 1500 and two Meere organs from 1816. During Open Monumentendag in September, visitors can view Rheden’s special monuments from the inside. The Museum for Modern Art is located in the wider regional area around Rheden. Kasteel Reuversweerd and Baak are castles in the vicinity of Rheden; Huize Babberich is a castle in the wider regional area.
