Gardens, castle and historic estates

At Middachten Estate, the gardens and castle are the main attractions, with specific visiting hours. The gardens of Middachten Estate are open from 3 June to 27 September 2026, Wednesday to Sunday, from 12:30 to 16:30. Guided tours of Middachten Castle are organised on request; the castle is open to visitors on Sunday afternoons in June, July and August. After the royal family, Middachten has the largest portrait collection in the Netherlands. In the forests of Middachten stands a memorial to people in hiding, relating to the Second World War. Hoppenkamp is an old farm near Middachten Estate.

Rhederoord Estate is a historic estate in De Steeg that originated in the 17th century through the acquisition of a number of plots of land and farms. The Rhederoord Estate experience feature is part of the experience feature routes. Jules Baron Brantsen is also associated with the estate; he was a notable resident of Rhederoord Estate as well as a circus baron and adventurer. The Carolinahoeve serves a dish made with local and organic ingredients.

History in the village landscape of De Steeg

Het Strooien Dorp is a complex of thatched-roof houses planned in 1919 as a social housing project. The houses of Het Strooien Dorp on Bentincklaan are clearly visible from the railway line and are considered an example of early social housing in De Steeg and the municipality of Rheden. Kerkgebouw De Steeg is a former Roman Catholic church from 1927, designed by Jan Stuyt and characteristic of its time. Fourteen Stations of the Cross by Pierre Stordiau hang in a side transept of Kerkgebouw De Steeg.

In front of De Steeg town hall, bronze statues of the writer Simon Carmiggelt and his wife Tiny sit on a bench. The artist Wim Kuijl created the statues of Simon and Tiny Carmiggelt in 1990.
