In the southern part of these floodplains, visitors can go for a walk and may encounter cows and horses along the way. Belmonte Arboretum offers views across the Neder-Rijn to the Betuwe.

Various destinations can also be reached on foot or by bicycle from Wageningen’s centre: From there, you can walk to the botanical gardens, while the entire municipality can be reached within 15 minutes by bicycle. The 12.5-kilometre Klompenpad Wageningse Engpad trail runs through the outskirts of Wageningen, along the edge of the forest, across the push moraine and along sandy paths. Shorter is the 3-kilometre Stad der Bevrijding walking route, which focuses on Wageningen’s history during the Second World War.

History and remembrance

The De Casteelse Poort City Museum presents Wageningen’s history in two permanent exhibitions. The Historiezaal shows the formation of the landscape and 5,000 years of settlement history in Wageningen. The remains of a castle tower can be seen in the basement of the city museum. The city is also home to the Grote Kerk, which dates back to the 13th century.

The history of 1945 is present at several locations. At Hotel De Wereld, discussions about the surrender document of 5 May 1945 took place; one day later, the Wageningen surrender document was signed in the auditorium of the university. A memorial plaque at Hotel De Wereld commemorates the liberation of Wageningen on 5 May 1945. The Nationale Herdenking Capitulaties 1945 is held every year at the National Liberation Monument on 5-Mei Square in Wageningen. For many years, the Bevrijdingsfestival has also been held in Wageningen on 5 May.

Public remembrance also includes the Vrijheidsvuur, a copper artwork with an eternal flame. It plays an important role in the annual Bevrijdingsvuurestafette. The Jewish memorial De Levenspoort commemorates 71 victims from Wageningen’s Jewish community who died during the Second World War.

Art and campus

Beeldengalerij Het Depot is open free of charge four days a week; visitors are allowed to touch most of the sculptures. The De Dreijen and Hinkeloord arboretums belonging to Het Depot can be visited daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Beeldengalerij Het Depot can be reached from Wageningen bus station in about ten minutes on foot and has good public transport connections.

On Wageningen Campus, the Wageningen Campus Tour takes about an hour and leads across the campus grounds. The Unifarmtour takes you through Unifarm’s greenhouses, where changing displays of research projects and experiments are presented. By appointment, Stadsbrouwerij Wageningen organises brewery tours and tastings for groups of 10 to 120 people. Its beers are brewed with grain from fields around Wageningen. Wagenings Wijngoed offers guided vineyard tours with a tasting of three wines.
