Oude IJsselstreek can be explored in a variety of ways. The Oude IJssel is suitable for rowing or canoeing. At the Min40Celsius visitor centre, visitors can dig for bones themselves and try to light a fire with flint.

Culture and history

The Nederlands IJzermuseum in the DRU Industrial Park is a museum spread across several locations at Hutteweg 26 and Hutteweg 32. From Doetinchem railway station, it can be reached on Arriva bus route 28 to the Industriepark stop; from Terborg railway station, the Huntenbus 195B community bus runs to Ulft. The surviving buildings of the DRU site are industrial monuments. This is where 250 years of iron history were made.

The DRU Heritage Media Tour comprises 15 storytelling stations spread throughout the park and runs past the monumental buildings of the DRU complex. Visitors can choose the order of the route themselves or follow the stations in the prescribed order.

At the Het Hofshuus museum farmstead, historical objects show how people worked and lived on the farm during the first half of the 20th century. The name Hofshuus derives from the estate complex "Den Hoff tho Versevelt" of the Counts of Lohn in Varsseveld, which existed in the 13th century. Hofshuus is a well-preserved farmhouse of the Westphalian hall house type; its grounds include gardens and old cultivated plants.

At the ’t Vriezelerdiekske site in Sinderen, Oude IJsselstreek, a hyperrealistic artwork can be found on the walls of the animal feed manufacturer Voerwaarts B.V. The site is part of the Silo Art Tour Achterhoek. The artworks on this tour can be experienced up close along cycling or hiking routes.

When Huis Landfort is open, visitors can walk on the house’s island or around the Small Estate. The vegetable garden with its 90-metre-long espalier fruit wall and the orchard are also accessible.

Water and nature

The landscape of Oude IJsselstreek includes ancient river dunes. Engbergen is a river dune of the Oude IJssel and has always been known as a recreational area. The recreational area has a dense network of walking, cycling and horse-riding paths.

The hiking network in Oude IJsselstreek has nine starting points. They can be recognised by red information boards with maps and route information. From these starting points, visitors can follow ready-made routes or combine their own routes.

Cycling and routes

The Mill Route connects five mills via a cycling route based on the numbered junction system. This junction system is used when cycling in Oude IJsselstreek and is highly valued by cyclists. On the Mill Route, Slaege is used as a basis for pure bread and beer.

The Ulft–Bocholt cycling route follows low-traffic paths along the water and leads from the DRU Industrial Park industrial monument to Bocholt in Germany. The Oude-IJsselstreek route passes characteristic castles, centuries-old farmhouses and a tea garden.
