Holiday apartment in Groesbeek: Viticulture and nature

Groesbeek combines viticulture with a landscape of hills, river areas and historic paths. The area has around 25 hectares of vineyards and six winegrowers. In the Groesbeek area, the WijnBoerTour passes vineyards and wine farms. It begins at the Nederlands Wijnbouwcentrum, where wine tasting with Groesbeek wines and matching local specialities is offered.

Nature

Millingerwaard is a nature reserve in the municipality of Berg en Dal and part of the Gelderse Poort National Landscape. The area covers around 800 hectares and includes woodland, wetlands, meadows and surface waters. The surrounding area of the municipality of Berg en Dal also features various types of landscape, including rivers, polders, a push moraine, hills and streams. Dogs are allowed on a lead in the municipality’s varied surroundings. You can also go canoeing in the Millingerwaard.

Culture and history

The Vrijheidsmuseum in Groesbeek explores the Second World War and the subject of freedom from several perspectives, including Operations Market Garden and Veritable. A Roman aqueduct was built in Berg en Dal to channel water to Nijmegen; the Romans also drilled for water there to supply their military camps. The Ommetje Heerlijkheid Beek focuses on the architectural styles of the villas in the village of Beek and the historic villas on the outskirts of Berg en Dal.

Two historic hill fortifications on the Duivelsberg are freely accessible and overlook the Rhine Valley. The two-kilometre Grens walking route leads to the summit of the Duivelsberg and to Motte Mergelpe. Remains of its outer bailey are still visible. Motte Mergelpe is an artificial castle mound with ditches and an earth rampart.

Paths

The Poëziepad in the village of Berg en Dal is a bench route with 16 benches. Nine of the benches have poetry plaques. The two-kilometre Familiepad Duivelsberg runs through the Duivelsberg woodland in Berg en Dal. The path has only slight differences in elevation and is suitable for families with different fitness levels and age groups. Along the Boerenlandpaden, landowners open their cultivated land to walkers.

The N70 Nature Walking Route crosses eight hills and offers views of polders, floodplains and the river landscapes of the Waal and Rhine. The route is clearly marked with green posts. A roughly one-hour ride on the Zonnetrein passes through the Ooijpolder, along traces of the stone industry and the nature development that resulted from it.

Getting around

The Via Romana is a cultural and historical cycling route between Xanten and Nijmegen with historic and scenic attractions. The Grenzland-Draisine runs between Groesbeek, Kranenburg and Kleve along a former railway line. Wheelchair users can travel on the Grenzland-Draisine if they register in advance when booking.

Berg en Dal can be explored by bicycle or on foot; bicycles can be rented at Nijmegen railway station. The area is easily accessible by public transport. Berg en Dal is characterised by significant differences in elevation and beautiful views.
