Museumpark Orientalis: Architecture and visual artworks

Today, Profetenlaan is the main entrance to the Museumpark Orientalis grounds. Between 1911 and 1940, numerous buildings and interiors were created in Museumpark Orientalis based on designs by Jan Stuyt and Piet Gerrits; they are inspired by the architecture of Syria and Jordan. The Cenakelkerk, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, was built between 1913 and 1915 on behalf of the Heilig-Land-Stichting, based on designs by J. Stuyt and the assisting draughtsman J. Margry, in collaboration with the visual artist P. Gerrits.

The Sermon on the Mount reliefs consist of eleven concrete reliefs set into a natural-stone retaining wall and illustrate Christ’s Sermon on the Mount according to Matthew. The Hof van Olijven is a walled courtyard with a grotto containing an olive press, a burial chapel and two artificial-stone figures. From 1916 to 1918, Piet Gerrits designed Beth Juda as a representation of an early-20th-century Palestinian village. The synagogue’s floor plan and furnishings were modelled on a Sephardic synagogue dating from 300 to 600 AD, which Piet Gerrits studied in the Holy Land between 1906 and 1911.

The unfinished Heilig-Hartbasiliek is an Oriental-style building; only the atrium and part of one arm of the cross were completed. The Wijnpers at Profetenlaan 2 consists of two large and two small basins; a sukkah stands on it. The Geboortegrot is a concrete rock formation with a polychrome sculpture of Mary with the Child and the sleeping Joseph.
