Arnhem combines impressive history with art, a vibrant urban landscape and unusual nature experiences. At the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem, buildings, objects and stories reach back 400 years. Visitors can also try things out for themselves: in a workshop, they can learn a craft.

Culture and history

Museum Arnhem presents modern and contemporary art as well as design, including fashion and jewellery. It is located on a high glacial lateral moraine and offers views of the Rhine. The museum also has a sculpture garden that is freely accessible. In the Grote or Eusebius Church, Arnhem’s history is told from the medieval period through the Second World War to post-war reconstruction. The panoramic lift goes up to a height of 73 metres and offers views over Arnhem and its surroundings. The church regularly hosts exhibitions about its own history and the Battle of Arnhem. At the Erfgoedcentrum in Rozet, objects and stories together tell the history of Arnhem and the surrounding area.

Historic routes through Arnhem

From Arnhem’s railway stations, visitors can walk directly into the city centre, where they can reach historic sights, shops and cafés. The City Walk Arnhem is a 4-kilometre walking route through historic buildings and places in Arnhem. It includes several audio points on the Liberation Route Europe, with stories about events that took place at the respective locations during the Second World War.

The Airborne City Tour Arnhem is designed as a walking tour through the city centre and brings the Battle of Arnhem of September 1944 to life through 25 audio points. It covers the attempt by Allied airborne troops to capture the bridges over the major rivers, including the bridges in Arnhem, turning the city into a frontline area. Airborne at the Bridge, a branch of the Airborne Museum overlooking the John Frost Bridge, is also located in the centre of Arnhem. There, stories are told about three people who fought and died at this location during the Battle of Arnhem. Airborne at the Bridge also has a VVV information point with tourist information about the region.

Nature and urban landscape

Stadstuin Kweekland is an edible landscape on a typical southern Arnhem slope next to Sonsbeek Park. Guided tours and workshops are offered there. Lunch and dinner are served in the garden and greenhouse. Sonsbeek Park is recommended for birdwatching. In early spring, wood anemones, snowdrops and foxgloves, among others, can be seen beneath the trees. Molenplaats Sonsbeek offers walking and cycling routes.

Wildlife and water

At Burgers’ Zoo, visitors can experience different habitats: tropical rainforest, the rocky deserts of Arizona, a coral reef, the savannah of East Africa and the jungle of Southeast Asia. A wooden bridge leads through the East African savannah habitat. The Netherlands Water Museum explores the importance of water in everyday life, in the Netherlands and around the world. Games and activities take place in the museum or its surroundings.
