Holiday apartment in Doesburg: Historic city centre and museums

Doesburg’s city centre has been a state-designated protected townscape since 1974. The medieval street layout is still recognisable in the historic city centre, which is also adorned with more than 150 monuments.

Culture

The Lalique Museum is located in the heart of Doesburg’s historic city centre, near Arnhem. It is dedicated to the world-famous French jewellery and glass artist René Lalique (1860–1945). In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum presents temporary exhibitions featuring works by Lalique as well as works by his contemporaries.

The Openbaar Vervoer & Speelgoed Museum is located in the Gildehofje in the old centre. It presents the history of public transport in the Netherlands, particularly that of the Gelderse Tramwegen in the Achterhoek. Historical everyday objects, photographs and scale models of old trains and buses are part of the exhibition. The museum also has a large collection of old toys, presented in shop windows depicting a small village scene. The Mosterdmuseum is part of a unique mustard factory within Doesburg’s fortifications.

The Grote Kerk, or Martinikerk, is 94 metres high and the tallest building in Gelderland. A guided climb of the tower involves 220 steps. During the climb, the tower guide explains the history of the tower and the carillon, while the tour also offers views over the Hanseatic city of Doesburg and the IJssel landscape.

Routes and landscape

The Nature History Walk leads through the historic city centre and across Doesburg’s fortifications. From the Lage Linie, it offers views of the greenery beyond the fortifications. From Doesburg, you can also walk and cycle along the IJssel and Oude IJssel.

The range of walking and cycling routes includes culinary tasting routes, photography routes, children’s routes, Hanseatic routes and short walking loops. The Hanze Walk of Fame follows the traces of the city’s rich Hanseatic history with audio, 3D historical buildings and augmented reality.

Local character

Doesburg is regarded as a starting point for exploring the surrounding area. The town lies on the edge of the Veluwezoom and on the IJssel landscape of the Liemers.

Doesburg’s culinary character includes Doesburgse mosterdsoep, which is served as a house speciality in various restaurants and informal eateries. The Hanzefeesten, Doesburg Bruist and Doesburg Binnenste Buiten are also notable events. On the first Sunday of each month, Doesburg is presented as the region’s cultural centre.

Doesburg can be reached by bus route 51 from the railway stations in Zutphen or Arnhem.
