Lochem showcases the cultural landscape typical of the Achterhoek, with rows of trees, gently curving banks, forests and heathland. Between the historic centre, rural areas and hilly landscapes, the municipality forms a varied picture.

Landscape and routes

The Veen Route connects the historic centre of Lochem with the surrounding rural area. It passes by peatland areas, over hills and through forests. Together with the Kale Berg and the Paasberg, the Lochemse Berg forms part of the hilly landscape of the municipality of Lochem. The Paasberg hill is also located in the vicinity of Lochem.

A walking route across the Ampsen and Verwolde estates passes a special tree path. Along this route, there are 17 different tree species. The park garden and estate of Huis Verwolde can also be explored on foot.

Cycling and walking

Lochem has cycle routes based on the signposted junction system, marked routes, as well as routes for handcycles and wheelchairs. The Lochem Route is 21 kilometres long and has 295 metres of elevation gain. This means that various signposted forms of cycling are available alongside a clearly defined route with a fixed length and elevation figure.

Culture and history

Huis Verwolde can be visited independently in fully furnished rooms, as part of a guided tour or during an activity. A permanent feature of Museum STAAL is the Staringkoepel, a tea house on the River Berkel. Museum STAAL in Almen presents the landscape, history and culture of the Achterhoek. A.C.W. Staring (1767–1840) loved this region.

There are 24 buildings in the municipality of Lochem that are or have been used as a church, synagogue or mosque. Ampsen Castle is the largest castle in the municipality of Lochem. A castle on the Berkel, within walking distance of the Lochemse Berg, dates from 1520, was formerly a manor house, was extensively remodelled in 1886 and can only be viewed from the outside.

At the edge of the forest lies Lochem’s green open-air theatre; its grandstand was built into the slopes of the Paasberg. The monumental water tower on the Paaschberg was built in 1924 and designed by the architect H. Wessel. Museum MORE is a museum of modern realism in the Netherlands.
