Holiday apartment in Culemborg: city history, mills and nature trails

Culemborg makes its urban history visible at specific locations. Large parts of the historic city wall have been preserved, including on the western side and near Ridderstraat. Of the seven city gates that once existed, only the Binnenpoort remains. A city walk through Culemborg takes you past several places and buildings that have played an important role in the city’s history.

Culture

The Elisabeth Weeshuis Museum is Culemborg’s city museum. In the monumental building, a journey through time leads through nine museum rooms. The Culemborgse Weeshuis also has a special historical distinction: it is the oldest orphanage in the Netherlands built specifically for orphans.

The mills also bring the city’s history to life. At the Johannamolen, visitors can make flour themselves using hand mills. Guided tours last between 20 minutes and one hour and are suitable for children and adults. The practical workshop „Be a miller for a day“ goes even further: among other things, participants climb into the sails, turn the mill, operate the brake and work with the hoist.

The Grote or Barbara Church is the largest monument in Culemborg. The Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1839 on the foundations of the St. Peter’s or Gasthuis Chapel. De Hoop was completely restored in 1993 as a mill capable of grinding.

History

In the wider region around Culemborg lies Vuijlcop, a castle. In the surrounding area are Kasteel Schonauwen and Weerdesteyn, both castles, as well as Uitweg Werk a/d Korte, a fortress. The castle garden includes a small museum room and a tea house with special finds. The thick walls of a 13th-century tower have also been preserved there.

Fort Werk aan het Spoel near Culemborg is a cultural meeting place on the Lek. The site of Werk aan het Spoel was established in 1815 as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.

Nature

The Kikkerpad runs through water-rich and green areas within the built-up area of Culemborg. In Culemborg Oost, a circular walking route marked with green stickers runs through the area, while in Culemborg West there is a circular walking route marked with blue stickers. Both are approximately 9 km long and can be walked in either direction. The access route to the Kikkerpad is signposted from Culemborg railway station.

The parks Doornse Gat, Heihuis, Boswachterij Austerlitz and Voordaan are also located in the wider region around Culemborg.

Water and trails

Various cycling, hiking and walking routes cross near the Liniepont landing stage at Werk aan het Spoel. A ferry for all types of traffic operates year-round between Culemborg and Schalkwijk; in Culemborg, it departs from the marina at Veerkade.

At the Eetkamer, breakfast is served with various traditionally made delicacies. These include Culemborgse kaasstengels, a speciality of Culemborgs Bakhuis.
