Zaltbommel is a place for discoveries amid heritage conservation, urban history and paths through the countryside. Those considering a holiday apartment in Zaltbommel as a possible accommodation option can get to know individual sights and routes in the following sections: from protected buildings and museums to park paths, nature reserves and routes along the Waal.

Culture

Sint-Maartenskerk is a Rijksmonument, meaning a nationally protected monument of the Netherlands, with significant cultural and historical value. Waterpoort is a pointed-arch gateway dating from the 14th century, which was restored in 1942–1943. Another striking structure is the Gootspoken in Zaltbommel, figures by the artist Joris Baudoin.

Slot Loevestein is a medieval castle dating from 1358 and belongs to the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, which was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2021. During a visit, you can discover the castle, the bailey and the soldiers’ village. Kasteel Nederhemert is also a restored castle dating from the 14th century; its surroundings are suitable for walking and cycling.

The Stadskasteel Zaltbommel Museum presents a permanent exhibition as well as temporary exhibitions and conveys the history of Zaltbommel and the Bommelerwaard. The mikveh can be visited and provides insight into Jewish heritage in Zaltbommel. In addition, the Jewish heritage route leads to places in Zaltbommel connected with the lives of members of the Jewish community before the Second World War.

The Gasthuiskapel is also part of the city’s cultural programme: exhibitions, lectures, concerts and entire music festivals take place there. The Everhardus walking route has its own guide figure in Everhardus van Balveren, who is described as an alderman and tax collector in the 15th century. The routes of Hanzestad Zaltbommel lead through the city’s rich Hanseatic history and are accompanied by Everhardus de schepen, Jan de koopman, Marycken de molenaarster or Zacharias de zakkendrager.

Landscape

The water tower stands on the edge of the northeastern part of Zaltbommel’s old-town earthworks. Its surrounding landscape was transformed into a park with walking paths. The water tower is characterised by its shape, which consists of a combination of a cylinder and a cone. The tower of Sint-Maartenskerk is more than 60 metres high and offers views of the medieval fortress of Zaltbommel and the wider surrounding area.

The Stadswallen of Zaltbommel were transformed from fortifications into a green landscape park from 1834 onwards. From 2017 to 2025, the park was restored according to the 1834 park design. On the Stadswallen, visitors can walk independently with the help of a special walking and tree-route map; the walking map passes fourteen notable trees.

Natuurwacht Bommelerwaard manages De Kloosterwiel, a ten-hectare nature reserve between Zaltbommel and Gameren. Another connection between path and landscape is provided by the Struinroute Vuren–Zaltbommel: it leads back to the other side of the Waal via a pedestrian ferry.

Experiences

The Fiep treasure hunt starts at the Stadskasteel Museum and includes game elements such as Pluk’s tow truck and a Jip-and-Janneke house. Every year, numerous performances are on the programme at De Poorterij Theatre, including cabaret, dance, music and productions for young audiences.

Food and Drink

The Zaltbommelse Stadsbrouwerij has a taproom with a varied beer menu and a weekly updated beer list. IJssalon Hygge offers workshops in which participants can prepare a flavour of ice cream or an ice-cream dessert.
