Holiday apartment in Barneveld: Nature, Culture and Veluwe Experiences

The forests of the Veluwe near Garderen, including Wilde Kamp and Bergsham, are ideal for hiking and cycling. Ancient burial mounds and former enclosed plots of land can be seen there; red deer and wild boar are also found in the area. The ten-kilometre Het Paradijspad klompenpad trail runs through the outskirts of Barneveld, across meadows and estates and along streams, heathland and woodland. This route offers good opportunities to observe various bird species and deer.

Nature

Shorter and longer routes also reveal different sides of the surrounding area. The walk through Barneveld is just under 3.5 kilometres long and starts at the Oranjerie on the De Schaffelaar estate. The present-day Schaffelaar House dates from 1852. Its main building is distinguished by a design in the English Gothic Revival style that is almost unique in the Netherlands.

In the ’t Sol area, mixed woodland, a park-like section, a former arboretum, heathland and a former sand quarry alternate with one another. Ravens breed there. Wilbrinkbos is a wooded estate with a manor house, hedgerows, heathland, ponds and small peat lakes. It is located on the Hessenweg, an old trade route to Germany. The rare great crested newt is found in the lake at Wilbrinkbos.

West of Barneveld lies the group of estates comprising Klein Bylaer, Kallenbroek and Groot Otelaar, set in a wet landscape crossed by streams. This ensemble can be explored on foot and by bicycle.

Kootwijkerzand is accessible year-round between sunrise and sunset. Another way to access the landscape is the Pad van Zus hiking trail in Garderen, which passes prehistoric burial mounds.

Culture and History

In the centre of Barneveld, Museum Nairac has been housed since 1975 in a former 17th-century brewery opposite the church. The Nederlands Pluimveemuseum has almost 3,500 square metres of exhibition space. In Terschuur, the Oude Ambachten & Speelgoed Museum presents 160 crafts, shops and fully furnished workshops. The collection focuses primarily on Dutch history from around 1910 to 1970. Several traditional crafts are demonstrated live there every week. The museum also includes an open-air area with historic agricultural machinery.

Radio Kootwijk also combines architectural history and technology. Guided tours explain the architecture, technology, history and former life in the village of Radio Kootwijk. The monumental Sfinx transmission building is regarded as a defining landmark of Kootwijk. In Garderen, the Zandsculpturenfestival is an annual event. In Kootwijkerbroek, the fully restored Puurveense Molen is recommended as a stop for visitors exploring the surrounding area by bicycle.

For cycling tours, the 20-kilometre Doortraproute Barneveld follows wide paths, quiet roads and clear intersections.

At the water, Zeumeren in Voorthuizen offers several options: Zeumeren Watersport provides water skiing, wakeboarding and stand-up paddleboarding. Recreatiegebied Zeumeren is an official bathing site. SchatEiland Zeumeren is an indoor adventure park covering more than 5,500 square metres.
