Ansembourg: Historic Gardens, Castles and Châteaux

Ansembourg combines an impressive castle history with landscaped gardens and a variety of excursion ideas in the Valley of the Seven Castles. At the centre is the Grand-Château d’Ansembourg with its historic gardens, which are open to visitors daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Opening hours may be restricted during private events. Baroque Gardens with Special Details

The gardens of the Grand-Château d’Ansembourg were created at the behest of Count Lambert Joseph. It extends for around 140 metres; ten gods and ten goddesses face one another in pairs. The Nouveau Château d’Ansembourg, also called the Grand-Château d’Ansembourg, was built in 1639 as the residence of Thomas Bidart, the operator of the ironworks. In the lower part of the gardens there is also a plane tree around 250 years old. Such specific details make the visit varied: alongside architecture and garden art, there is an old tree, sculptures, staircases, fountains and mythological figures to discover.

Medieval Traces and Protected Sites

The Vieux Château d’Ansembourg stands on a rocky spur above the Eisch and is visible from the neighbouring municipalities. A “Humbert d’Ansembourg” was already mentioned in a document in 1135; this is taken as evidence that a castle complex existed at that time. It is not possible to visit the Vieux Château because it is privately owned. Specially established viewpoints do, however, provide views of the monument. This distinction is important when planning your day: here, the exterior view takes centre stage, while the historic gardens of the Grand-Château are open to visitors.

On the wooded Kapellenbüsch hill opposite the château, a legendary pilgrimage chapel and a former rectory form an ensemble. Its exposed location creates views towards the valley. The Chapelle de Notre-Dame dit Mont Marie, on the other hand, is privately owned and not freely accessible. Those interested in religious and regional history can experience these places as part of the historic atmosphere, but should distinguish between the respective access situations.

Excursions through the Valley of the Seven Castles

Ansembourg is located in a landscape that can also be explored on longer excursions. The 25-kilometre route through the Valley of the Seven Castles leads through idyllic forests and past picturesque villages and includes the historic garden of the Grand-Château d’Ansembourg. The Attert cycle path (PC 12) is considered suitable for family outings. On its way to the seven castles, it follows a route through a valley with castles and fortresses, including the Baroque Château d’Ansembourg. Depending on your energy levels, you can therefore focus on a garden stroll, a longer journey through the countryside or a bike tour.

To reach the grounds of the Grand-Château d’Ansembourg, you can use the A6–Mamer-Capellen or A7–Mersch motorway exit. When choosing your accommodation, it is worth considering your planned excursions and the kind of day you want to have together. Those who mainly want to visit the gardens will plan differently from travellers who also want to include the 25-kilometre route or the Attert cycle path.

A Playful Way through the Castle Gardens

A special family activity is “Énigme à Ansembourg”. It leads through the castle gardens, including through a maze to the large plane tree and to a fountain. Along the way, six clues are collected and a missing eagle is returned to its place. This connects the garden spaces with a specific task and gives children a different way to engage with the historic grounds. For trip planning, this experience can be combined with the figures in the “Alley of Mythologies”, the fountains and the terraces to create a varied visit.
